"2007 Demo Review"

Year of Confession
S/T-Demo Independent

by: Matthew Hoffman
Staff Writer

Year of Confession are a thrash-core band formed in 2003 from Massapequa, N.Y. There self-titled demo is a “sampler” of an upcoming EP and consists of three songs lasting approximately 12 minutes. This is the latest from the band that released a full length two years ago entitled Cycles of Man.

The demo starts off with the hammering drums of Brian Calhoun, cool bass play from Joe Micolo III and sledge hammer riffs from guitarist Daniel Buckley. The harsh “death” vocals of John Alaia jump in a second later to fully compliment the assault. This thrash-core song is entitled “A Blood Decree” and is a decent song.

Up next is the devastating “Bring Me Back” which sees a few tempo changes and death growls from Alaia as well. His vocals here sound a lot like Randall Blythe of Lamb of God. He also use spoken words as a cool effect on this track.

The third cut “Lucid” is the most hardcore of the three songs with traditional hardcore riffs and uses a cool slow down section as well. The drums on this track are the real calling card though as Brian Calhoun’s technique and tones are first rate.

These boys are talented and really seem to get “it” as they use their wide ranging influences of Slayer, Pantera and Faith No More to create their own unique and intense brand of metal.

Keep and eye out for the EP and pick it up when available.

"Long Island metal act Year of Confession delivers nothing but brutality with their new 3-song demo. The raw emotion coupled with each hard hitting chord on every track is unrivaled by any so-called competition. Simply, it is a
headbanging masterpiece.

That's what I thought.

With the energy behind each song, it is hard to believe that this monstrous sound comes from just a 4-piece band. But it does. And it's real. And it fucking rocks. Each song contains the essential ingredients of a great metal tune: killer riffs, murderous screams, flawless breakdowns-all mixed in with the aggressive melodic touch that is necessary to leave you wanting more.

YOC's passion for creating awesome music is one to recognize. They love what they do. They put their heart and soul into producing music that not only rocks, but dominates. And dominate they will. Don't believe me? Just take a listen…"
