Feeling a bit camera shy

I have been writing songs since the age of 11 and singing to live audiences since the age of 15.

My new album, which is available for purchase from my website (www.yiannisofficial.com) is entitled 'Depth Of My Design' and that phrase came to me when I was trying to sum up the burning desire I have always had to achieve great success as a recording and performance artist. People often comment on the emotion that I put across in my songs and I think that's essential to who I am. While the dream of fame and fortune burns away at my core, there is also the fundamental point of wanting to touch people - for them to listen to my songs and really connect with them. I think with my ballads in particular, people really do feel that connection.

In addition to the hunger for the 'bigger dream' I have also been singing professionally as a solo artist for over seven years and hence boast a versatile set list of covers and original material.

In 2000 I was part of a male/female mixed pop band called Exces5ive and we performed at, amongst other venues, the London Astoria. In April 2003, as part of the Help a London Child campaign, I was interviewed live on Capital FM by DJ James Cannon and granted two minutes of airtime to sing an excerpt from my own original song ‘The Power Of…’ acappella. The song has since been re-vamped and fully produced and is now the opening track of the new album ‘Depth Of My Design’.

Also in 2003, I received widespread television and press coverage when I was one of the top 75 finalists of Pop Idol Series 2, after beating out competition from over 20,000 applicants. My press coverage included three national newspapers and the front pages of two local newspapers. In addition to appearing on both the TV shows Pop Idol and Pop Idol Extra on numerous occasions throughout the series, I was also invited to be interviewed on morning TV show ‘Rise’. An interview and an excerpt from an original song were also aired on Essex FM in September 2003.

I find it difficult to categorise my music. I think it would generally fit under the umbrella of pop, but I love experimenting with different styles within that. I have been influenced by so many artists, a list of some of these artists can be found on my myspace page at www.myspace.com/yiannismusic
