Biography

Biography:
Yinon Muallem currently lives in Istanbul and works as the Cultural Attach of Israel in Turkey.
He was born in Israel in 1968 to parents of Iraqi origin. He began his musical career playing Latin percussion but was drawn to Middle Eastern music going back to his roots. Through his career he has developed his own unique style, playing Middle Eastern percussion instruments such as the darbuka, the def, the bendir, the Iranian zarb, the kanjira (South Indian tambourine) and the Gatham (clay pot).

In 2001 he moved to Istanbul and joined Istanbul Sazendeleri, a Turkish instrumental group made of some of the leading virtuosi of Turkish music. Yinon has performed with Ross Daly (Greece), Yair Dalal (Israel), Omer Faruk Tekbilek (Turkey, USA), Suleyman Erguner (Turkey), Alim Gasimov (Azerbaijan), Subash Chandran and Ganesh Kumar (India), Zhubin Kalhor (Iran), Piris Eliyahu (Israel), Eyal Sela (Israel), Yasmin Levy (Israel), Muhammed Alnuma (Iraq), Sheldon Sands (USA) and dancer Berrak Yedek (Turkey). Yinon's music is not limited to one specific style. This can be seen through his collaborations with such artists such as the accomplished Turkish classical harpist Sirin Pancaroglu as well as his participation with the Turkish Tekfen Philharmonic Orchestra and the Israeli Andalusian Orchestra.

Description of the Performance:

The music of Yinon Muallem is a unique blend of various genres and ethnic styles: Turkish classical, Sufi, gypsy, and Jewish music, with glimpses of Jazz and Indian music. Together with the Rast Ensemble, Yinon performs his own compositions as well as Israeli and Turkish traditional songs. On stage, they wander through melodies, improvisations and rhythms; a journey from traditional Israeli lullaby to a song inspired by Istanbul sunset, from a cheerful melody in maqam Rast to a klezmer tune from Eastern Europe.

Nefes (Breathe( 2010), ahenk Muzik
My album Nefes (Breath) is the part of my life since 2002 when my personal and musical journey brought me to Istanbul. The album represents both Turkish and Jewish traits of my soul while it is also the reflection of changes happening in my life, such as being a father and understanding life from beyond my own life, beyond myself.
