ChalkboardChange in partnership with Virginia State University’s (VSU) Department of Social Work will host a free screening of the critically-acclaimed HBO documentary Class Divide on Monday, November 7 at 7 p.m. in the Anderson Turner Auditorium. Following the screening, there will be a panel discussion featuring alumnus Mr. Hyisheem Shabazz Calier, Dr. Angela Henderson, assessment coordinator and assistant professor in the VSU’s Department of Social Work, and Ms. Trish Mendoza, founder and creator of ChalkboardChange.

Calier is the founder of H.O.O.D. Brothers LLC., a lifestyle brand consisting of the acronym Hustle Out Of Desperation, which is his personal mantra, driving the message of inspiring others to pursue your dreams regardless of your physical environment or disadvantages.

Calier was raised as the youngest of six children. During his upbringing, he began working at age 14 and continued to work to pay his way through Rice High school which was a private school located in Harlem N.Y. At age 15, Hyisheem was appointed to lead and orchestrate the production of a song that was featured in his neighborhood’s newspaper, Chelsea Now.

During his undergraduate years at the Virginia State University, Hyisheem began to tap into his creative passion by producing the University’s theme song used to recruit students as well as the University’s first ringtone. His interest in music ultimately resulted in the release of his first iTunes single “Radio”. Hyisheem’s outgoing personality combined with his leadership skills led him to becoming the University’s Student Government Association President. As a first-generation college student, Hyisheem also became the first of his family to graduate from college and pursue a professional degree.

Hyisheem is a devoted advocate for change. He truly believes that his story, his music, and vision of his lifestyle brand can spark a transformation in the lives of youth worldwide. Exhibiting leadership qualities from an early age, he has always experienced peers naturally gravitating toward him seeking advice on success. By remaining genuine, relatable, true to himself and fueled with positivity, he believes his music can encourage people to dream big and to pursue their dreams.

Hyisheem has been collaborating with many talented artists within the various realms or entertainment such as Kanye West, 2Chains, Pusha T, Marc Levin and many more. Most recently, he has worked with an esteemed roster of clients on multiple creative projects such as Blowback Productions on the HBO Documentary Class Divide. -
