"Pleased To Hear You – New Music for 3/15/2013"

Sound Description: Upbeat 3rd Wave Ska with dark edged punk roots
My Take: I had no idea who this band was until I did a search on Bandcamp and came across them. Their sound caught me immediately. The band has such a maturity for being a young band. Their song structures and instrumentation do not waste any moments. There aren’t solos for solos sake. Every last piece of music feels crucial to the song as a whole and fits seamlessly. The band also has somewhat of a minor key/dark edge to them. The songs Misfortunate Son and An Altered State Of Mind fall into that camp. This is where I think they truly shine as the vocals over top of that dark sound are quite melodic where you want to sing along with the band. I am truly impressed with some of the vocal abilities of a number of new bands and Young Costello is no exception. Fantastic! - Steven Bauer, www.readjunk.com

"YOUNG COSTELLO | ATTICA’S ASHES"

MALADIES AND MELODIES
Hauling from Austin, Texas, Young Costello have only just celebrated their first anniversary as a band and their ‘mini-album’ (5 tracks) is an accomplished debut. Self described as “4th wave” ska/reggae/blues/Latin the album opens with ‘Misfortunate Son’ and in 5 minutes, all genres are covered – starting with a fairly traditional ska beat, the song morphs into a latin/jazz middle with some New Orleans style trumpet before returning to the ska and punk climax…

Next up comes ‘An Altered State of Mind’ – more of a reggae influence on this one…there is a distant relationship to Operation Ivy & Rancid but a little less raw, more melodic and polished. The 5 piece band are clearly very accomplished musicians and the guitar solo accompanied by the trumpet is a stand out section of the song.

Track 3, ‘Goblin’ is a slow tempo starter morphing into a Serious Drinking lska/punk song with some strong vocals describing a relationship.

‘Levantate’ is a track that begins with Flamenco guitar and continues the Latin feel until the chorus explodes with some punk guitar and then back to the Latin trumpet and onto a ska beat. It’s all very intricate and complex and definitely demands that each song is listened to again and again.

The closing song ‘How’s it Gonna Be’ is, for me, the stand out on this mini album. Powerful lyrics overlay the powerful music and my guess is that this is a real crowd pleaser live. Again, the Rancid comparison comes to mind.

All in all, a very accomplished debut available for FREE download from the bands website here: http://youngcostello.com - http://www.punkonline.co.uk/
