The best kept secret in music

As invaded the South By Southwest (SXSW) Music Festival again this year, perhaps the opportunity that appealed the most was getting to see the new MCs who color today’s vast Hip-Hop scene. There were standout names for sure – like Warner Bros. signee XV, AllHipHop Breeding Ground artists like Emilio Rojas and Chevy Woods, the Airplane Boys, and Jon Connor, just to name a few.

We weren’t disappointed, as we saw some energetic stage shows that included the now, nearly-mandatory SXSW crowd dives, and lyrics that ranged from candy paint to trips to outerspace.

But, we went prepared ahead of time to catch up with Young Gliss, a newcomer from Philadelphia with ties to one of the biggest Hip-Hop dynasties in the world – The Legendary Roots Crew. We caught our first live glimpse of him recently as he opened for the Philadelphia leg of Jim Jones’ “Vampire Life Tour.”

His The Glimmer EP just dropped last week (see download below), featuring guest appearances from Killer Mike, Prodigy of Mobb Deep, and more. The project is promising, with tight, clean production and a variety of melodies over which to feature his eager flow. And yes, some of Young Gliss’ themes venture from pimping to hustling to grinding, but they’re packaged in an intelligent way that leaves you cheering him on in the end. -

Name: Young Gliss

Age: 23

Reppin’: Philadelphia

My standout records and/or moments have been: My record Glimmer and working with hip-hop legends such as Dice Raw, The Roots, Prodigy and Killer Mike.

My style and/or skills have been compared to: I like to consider my style my own, but I’m influenced by artist I grew up listening to such as Lupe, Jay-Z and Nas. That’s also the same artist I have been compared to.

I’m gonna change the game by: Bringing music back to originality and staying true to myself and being myself.

My goal in hip-hop is: To be the king, but I guess that’s what everyone wants. On another note, I just want my whole team to be on and my family to be straight. Hopefully in your top five list, when everything is said and done.

I’d Like to Work With: If I can make it happen, I would feature Kid Cudi on a hook and a guess verse with Wiz Khalifa.

I’m gonna be the next: Hip-hop legend

Still working on that hot first release.

Feeling a bit camera shy

Born in the rough streets of Philadelphia, Young Gliss is the youngest of two children.

He comes from a musical family, as Ahmir Thompson AKA Questlove is his cousin as well as Lee Andrews from Lee An-drews and The Hearts. Gliss actually received his rap name from his brother Ali's rap book. Ali overheard him reciting lyrics that he had written for a song and loved it. The name stuck, however, Ali would influence Gliss to find his own style and sound. He began his focus on lyrical word play and great hooks, which established him as a great upcoming artist in Philadelphia and beyond.

Young Gliss’ first mixtape ‘Dealing With The Pressure’ was released on May 28th 2010 and spoke about a young man dealing with stress in the world. He had features that included G-unit Trav as well as other artists from different locations. His next project ‘Dealing With The Pressure 2’ was released April 10th 2011. Young Gliss collaborated with up-coming artists such as Jon Connor, Cyssero, Rain and Shady Records artist Cashis. The project also featured The Roots Crew’s Dice Raw, Truck North and local Philly artist Chill Moody.

Following the ‘Dealing With the Pressure’ series Young Gliss released ‘The Glimmer EP’ in March of 2012 just in time for his showcase at SXSW with notable artists Juicy J, Action Bronson and Chevy Woods of the Taylor gang. ‘The Glimmer EP’ garnered much acclaim on respected hip-hop blogs such as The Source, XXL and Okayplayer. Once again Gliss collaborated with notable artists on the release that included Jon Connor, Prodigy of Mobb Deep, Killer Mike and more. The project was executive produced by Les Professionnels who recently had work featured on MTV and earned Gliss a spot as one of’s ‘Breeding Ground Artists.’

In June of 2012, Young Gliss decided to do a collabo EP called ‘The Dream Sequence’ with rising Philly talent De’Ko and producer Geez Seven. ‘The Dream Sequence’ was a very focused concept project showing that Gliss has the ability to take his audience to a very specific place and state of mind. Once again the project received a lot of press, which solidified Gliss’ role as a rising star in the music industry.

Young Gliss currently works with indie-label Raw Life out of Philly and has his own company SomthinLite with business partner and talented director Sil Beyah. His song ‘Charles Bradley’ has been receiving airplay in Philadelphia and local stations in North Carolina. Keep a look out for Young Gliss because he is coming up fast.
