Impassioned drifts of folk pop with heavy-hearted lyrics, delicate rivers of finger-picked guitars and a beautiful voice, singing in gorgeous poetic shivers.

Biography

Young Werther makes music that wraps you in its arms and slowly seeps into your skin. Abounding tales of epic love and distant shores, Young Werther casts an Australian eye over worldly themes, geographical landscapes and brings something very unique to alternative folk music.

Born to a family of butchers and farmers Mick Young began life in a small Australian mining town in the shadow of the mystical Grampians mountains. Initial dreams of a luminous Aussie rules football career fell away when he caught sight of a pig hanging from a hook in his dad’s shop. This macabre image prompted the impressionable Mick to listen to his creative ancestry – his grandmothers being poetess and painter and his father a passionate drummer and vocalist.
On moving to Melbourne, Mick formed The Restless in 2000 and within 4 years the band released two EPs and an album, from which two singles received Richard Kingsmill’s (Triple J) ‘King Pick’. The band also gained airplay on Radio 1 in the UK, College Radio in Canada, and toured Australia extensively, before disbanding in 2006.
Slowly piecing together songs under the moniker Young Werther, Mick found the perfect outlet for his pop-tinged folk songs and delicate singer-songwriter sensibility. In 2008 Mick recorded the stunning release ‘Treasure’, a collection of six tracks which showcase Mick’s powerful lyrics coupled with gentle acoustic guitar and lush instrumentation. The first single ‘Cornish Green’ was named Single of the Week by Melbourne’s Beat Magazine and received 5 stars from Triple J’s Caroline Tran.

In 2010 Mick teamed up with indie producer Nick Huggins (Kid Sam, Seagull) to make Young Werther's debut album 'Knights of the Department Store), which features a 5 piece band and take the music into rock/folk/pop territory.

Mick has shared stages with the likes of Clare Bowditch and The Audreys, Kate Miller-Heidke, Katie Noonan and Paul Dempsey to name a few.

Lyrics

Cornish Green

Written By: Michael Young

On a lonely desert wind
In the red dirt silence I sinned
In the face of my wide homeland
I longed for Cornish green
And heather
My Newlyn queen
For a while

I betrayed my countrymen
All my friends and all of my kin
With a wish for the watery land
I'd trade the sunshine and sand
For her history grand and vile

So on the Cornish cliffs I lay
The Atlantic Ocean it bayed
That one lost continent madeŠ
Faces, over the sea
Voices calling to me to stay

But in the home town of my birth
That old mining kingdom in dearth
I truly saw my homeland
Songlines, cattle and hay
Sandstone, granite and clay
Where the farm land and the kangaroo lay down

A Bird Made of Ice

Written By: Michael David Young

A Bird Made of Ice

Hang your bird made of ice by the window sill
Lest he thaw by your fireside
With cold wings you never think twice
When you're taken ill
But what are thoughts seen from the other side?

And where did our two souls come from?
Why do our hearts grow so cold in the night?

You and I we started our winter too early
With our words full of a bitter chill
You and I, we said things in spite on that evening
And in blew the cold and upon it that bird

Where did our two souls come from?
Why did our hearts grow so cold in the night?
The sun goes down
We close our eyes
And make like a bird made of ice
Like a bird made of ice

The Sun is a Merry-Go-Round

Written By: Michael David Young

Give me all your grudges
I will burn them in the setting sun

The sun is a merry-go-round

Give me all your grudges
I will burn them in the setting sun
We know what we've said and we know what we've done
So please put down your gun

Brothers In Harm's Way

Written By: Michael David Young

Brothers in Harm's Way

I come from a town where the treasure lay
In abattoirs and gold
We dig into the earth for the gilty clay
Terrified and cold

Asleep in the little town with its little ways
In the manor strange
With our eyes wide open but our souls estranged
Brothers in harm's way

The earth cries out in joy when we break her skin
Her creatures they do not
But I could hear the town hall clock ring out
Laying in my cot

Asleep in the little town with its little ways
In the manor strange
With our eyes wide open but our souls estranged
Brothers in harm's way

Courage, courage, courage for your small town
Kindness, kindness, kindness spreading around
Courage, courage, courage in that small town
Kindness, kindness, kindness is thin on the ground

But I come from a town where the treasure lay,
In abattoirs and gold,
We dig into the earth for the gilty clay
We're terrified and old

Asleep in the little town with its little ways
In the manor strange
With our eyes wide open but our souls estranged
Brothers in harm's way
Brother's in harm's way
Brother's in harm's way

Around the World

Written By: Michael Young

Hello distant land,
You called me from the north,
Here I am on time,
But it's written in your law,
In every word a lie,
That 'Travel makes you wise',

Have we been arount the world
Just to come back here,
And tell everyone we know,
That we've been around the world

What are memories?
Where do they lay down?
Where do they belong?
The guidebook in my hand,
The whisper in my ear,
Haunts me all night long...

'Have you been around the world,
Just to come back here,
And tell everyone you know,
that you've been around the world,
just to come back here,
and tell everyone you know,
that you've been around the world',

History has her way,
Of hiding from your sight,
Drowning you in her wine,
The earth once was flat and long,
But everyone was wrong,
A chorus of your dead ancestors throng and sing....

'Have we been around the world,
Just to come back here,
And tell eveyone we know,
That we've been around the world,
Just to come back here,
And tell everyone we know,
That we've been around the world,
Just to come back here,
And tell everyone we know,
That we've been around the world'.
