Biography

You Yell You Kick is a power-pop indie quintet hailing from the City of Destiny, Tacoma, WA. You Yell You Kick wants to make you move. ... or clap your hands, or shake your hips or a tambo, or maybe even hula-hoop to win a burrito.
the backstory:
Founding members Marian Ladenburg (lead vocals, guitar) and Derrick Robinson (lead guitar, vocals) met in early 2008, both looking to catch the ears and rhythm of a crowd with dance rock. The band's lineup was completed by 2009 with Doug Wheeler (drums, vocals), Matt Wright (keyboards, vocals) and Chris Lewis (bass). YYYK's songs vary widely, from intricate numbers with multiple key and tempo changes to straight-ahead riff-based dance hooks.
Stylistically, YYYK can be compared to Sleater-Kinney, The Rapture, Talking Heads, Of Montreal, The Cars, Franz Ferdinand, and The Breeders.
Marian fronts the band with vocal styling comparable to Debbie Harry and Karen O. Derrick, a recovering classical guitarist, traded his nylon string for a Rickenbacker and adds tight rhythmic hook-based guitar to the band. Matt offers lead and bass to YYYK's sound with analog synth, B3 organ and Rhodes. Chris knows his shit, lays the groove down and brings a heap of stage experience to the group. Doug beats the beat; he's a former punk and hardcore drummer of 15 years and his energy can only be described as must see.
