"Unsigned Guide"

Yules are French brothers Bertrand and Guillaume Charret. They could easily become the next Magic Numbers. These songs are so faultless that they could be released without any further interference. This is rich, heartwarming stuff.

They'd go down a storm at the summer festivals. It's the little touches that elevate the material and make it memorable; the summery organ tones that surface on Desperation Land, adding colour and drive, or the vigorous breezy guitars that slice through Carry On. There are shades of Simon and Garfunkel, Kings of Convenience and the crunching power pop of The Shins. Yules could be the greatest French import since Thierry Henry.

"Ones To Watch: YuLeS, A Truly Great Unsigned Act."

This has to be the most terrific discovery I’ve made in new band browsing recently and I find it very hard to believe they’ve not signed a record deal with anyone. YuLeS is comprised of brothers Bertrand and Guillaume from France who admit to having been “brought up in a house full of vinyl records, books and music instruments”. The result is, strangely, Americana at its finest. Here stands a duo living in France who has more in common with Nashville than some of the Nashville artists I’ve heard.

What I get from listening to YuLeS is incredibly heartfelt, passionate songwriting that resembles many of their influences without being unoriginal. The songs are a fiery combination of The Shins, Ron Sexsmith, Simon & Garfunkel, Jon Brion, Jeff Buckley and Randy Newman. The arrangements include lots of acoustic guitars, xylophone, harpsichords, recorders (you know, like a flute?), guitar, drums, occasional Hammond B-3 and vocals. There’s only four tracks on their MySpace site, but if you love any of the artists I’ve mentioned in that one sentence it would be very hard not to like them. YuLeS is an artist not to be missed and deserving of immediate attention on this side of the ocean.

Bio

Two brothers brought up in a house full of vinyl records, books and music instruments.
Father listens to Leonard Cohen with rapt attention and worships Paul McCartney while Mother is thrilled by Simon & Garfunkel's sound.
The discovery of "God Only Knows" is a total shock to them and they have no more doubts about what they want to do as they grow up. By choosing music, they want to keep communicating in an emotional way with their parents by prolonging their childhood.
Armed with their hypersensitivity and differences, the two gifted young lads try to imagine the perfect meeting between "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and "Famous Blue Raincoat" attempting to offer people what they feel by listening to their peers.
An acoustic guitar, a piano and a Moleskine notebook are what Bertrand and Guillaume need to write their pop songs fed with folk and rock music, melancholy love ballads, introspection and elegance.
Both very independent and multi-talented musicians, they spend a lot of time in their home studio to put the final touches to their songs searching for the liberating arrangements.
Once this hard work is accomplished, taking the songs to the stage is the step where they can free all the energy contained in their quest of sound.
To these esthetes, honesty is a line of conduct and they have the deepest respect for songwriters who, like them, live for their songs.
Translating into music what your heart tells you is like putting words on the untouchable and that is what YuLeS is trying to do.
