""Holiday Pop-up GIVE Event - Review""

Being able to partake in the event as a guest allowed me to see what these women leaders in the community are doing as well as see what gifts I could GIVE to family and friends for the holidays! There was even live entertainment from Bossa Nova artist, Yvonne Moneira who graced us with some really pretty songs, which put me in an even greater holiday spirit to GIVE! - Adventures of All That Jazz

Bio

Yvonne Moneira is a vocalist, flutist, and artist who blurs genre boundaries, explores new music, and goes beyond the conventions of “jazz” performance. Her repertoire ranges from explosive polyrhythmic pieces to introspective ballads, complimented by an inviting stage presence, R&B undertones, and a warm, infectious laugh. A typical show involves Yvonne performing in multiple languages, interacting with the audience, and taking listeners on a “journey”.

“When people come to a show, they want to ride an emotional roller coaster,” she says. “They want to come in one way, and leave another…to go on a journey. That’s the gift that I try to leave with my audience at the end of each show.”

Yvonne is often found at a wide range of venues, from New York’s “Blue Note” and “Birdland”, to DC’s “Twin’s Jazz” and “Bohemian Caverns”. Additional venues include the “Bowery Poetry Club”, “Nuyorican Poets Café”, “18th Street Lounge”, “Columbia Station”, and “Utopia”.

Yvonne is committed to various causes, particularly those that use music to break down barriers and spread awareness. She is known for her partnership with philanthropic organizations that support and empower women across the globe, including V.O.W. and Invest Africa.

She has studied under Jennifer Hamady (“Circque du Soleil”), Yolanda Wyns (“The Color Purple”), Julie Hardy (The New School), and Marybeth Lewandowski (National Symphony Orchestra & Director of Flute Studies at Catholic University).

Born in Chad (Africa), Yvonne is always drawn to Latin and African rhythms. Her international and cultural influences are heard in the various languages in which she sings (French, Spanish, Portuguese, and English).

Her band features an all-star cast that delight audiences with its rich, finely-blended sound and unique interpretations:
- John Davis (Drums): performances with Esperanza Spalding, Cassandra Wilson
- Richard Padron (Guitar): performances with Lauryn Hill, Paquito D'Rivera
- Carlos Cuevas (Piano): performances with Hubert Laws, Ronnie Laws, Bette Midler
- Ariel de la Portilla (Bass): performances with Grammy-Award Nominee Dave Eggar

Yvonne Moneira’s debut Bossa Nova EP, “No Regrets” is set to be released in May 2012. The EP features playful bossa nova arrangements, acoustic instrumentation, and soft vocals that rest dreamily behind the beat, evoking the feeling of romantic beach sunsets.
