Trading small town life for the bustle of the Dallas metroplex Zach’s acoustic folk sound took a bluesy-pop turn, culminating in an alt-country sensibility. The full-band is an electrifying big-city dimension resulting in David Ramirez’s painfully personal prose meets John Mayer’s blues-meddled pop.

Biography

As a storyteller, Zach Balch is an excellent communicator of the human experience, his guitar is an extension of the story, each note deliberate, yet spontaneous, so as to not tell the story the same way twice. Ever influenced by the intimate, personal nature of the hymns he learned as a child as well as the simplistic reliability of contemporary music, his writing is meaningful and effective.

Having grown up in the West Texas plains in a town where nobody locks their doors, at first glance Zach looks like the guitar-playing boy next door, and in many ways he is. “I just like to sit down and have conversation over a cup of coffee,” he says. But his sharp wit, thought provoking words and driving ambition stretch much further.

After trading small town life for the bustle of the Dallas metroplex, Zach’s acoustic folk sound took a bluesy-pop turn, culminating in an alt-country sensibility that artists like Ryan Adams and Pete Yorn are known for. When onstage with the rest of the band, pianist Ryan Pool, drummer Aaron Hass, bassist Robert Willis and guitarist Daryl Nelson, Zach Balch and The Company take on an electrifying big-city dimension. The result is David Ramirez’s painfully personal prose meets John Mayer’s blues-meddled pop.

Zach’s first recording endeavors, Light EP and Somebody’s Giant, were both charming favorites of friends and fans. In 2011, his first full-length album, VERSES, Zach Balch and The Company proved themselves a force to be taken seriously. Now, with the release of the 2012 single and music video, “Follow You Down,” Zach Balch is reaching more listeners than ever before.

To date, Zach and his band have graced the stages of The Gibson Showroom and The Austin Convention Center, Prophet Bar and Club Dada in Dallas, Jack’s in San Antonio and The Live Oak Music Hall in Fort Worth to name a few. In 2010, he won Best Acoustic Act at Dallas’ Fall Indie Fest, a category created exclusively and spontaneously for him, as he never even registered as a contestant. That’s Zach Balch in a nutshell: he takes people by surprise, keeps them on their toes and is so much more than meets the eye.

Travelin' Song

Written By: Zach Balch

As long as we're travelin', babe
I'll go where you want to go, babe
See all the sights that you want to see, babe
As long as we're travelin', babe

Because out on the country side, babe
I've got no where else to be, babe
Always said that we wanted to, babe
So now we're out on the country side, babe

And now home is the only place I'm runnin' from
Since you've been gone there's nothin' left for me to go back to
And now that you're gone
I will carry on
Without you

We made our plans yesterday, babe
But you couldn't wait for one more day, babe
It should've been me instead, babe
I'll carry you through the country side, babe

Every Story

Written By: Zach Balch

VERSE 1:
I'm not good at turning pages
I can't get past the pictures on page one
I'm not into happy endings
I'd rather pick a fight with anyone
But I've never won

VERSE 2:
You are into romance novels
Gushy stories that all turn out the same
You're waiting for your prince to come
To kiss your mouth and turn your night to day
But it won't happen that way

CHORUS:
Because every story writes itself
So put your book back on the shelf
Write one with me
Yeah, write one with me

VERSE 3:
I'm a knight in dented armor
I'm nothing like the hero in your dreams
But if you look past my battle scars
You'll see the more I struggle, the more it means to me
Oh love

CHORUS

BRIDGE:
Oh love is not a fairytale
It's as real as you and me
No, it's not a fairytale
So stop pretending

CHORUS

Dreams

Written By: Zach Balch

I wish you may, I wish you might
Dream something sweet as you sleep tonight
It's been a long hard road for you
I can't understand what you're going through

But I'll be standing strong beside
This loving hearted friend of mine
And when you need me, call my name
And I'll hold you til it goes away

Now all my life I've searched for meaning
I've got dreams and I'm still believing
But there is nothing I want more
Than to be the man who you adore

So I'll be standing strong beside
This loving hearted friend of mine
And when you want me I am yours
There is no dream that I want more

A dream's a way to say
That it'll all be fine someday
So while you're dreaming that there's hope for you
I'll be dreaming I'm the one to see you through

So until then I'll stand strong beside
This loving hearted friend of mine
And together we will dream of days
When everything will be okay

Run

Written By: Zach Balch

VERSE 1:
Is it fear, or is it wonderful
To face the dreams that you've been dreaming about
Is there ever any doubt that you
And all you've learned
Can jump into the great unknown
With the truth from books that you were shown
Are you up for it?

VERSE 2:
Did they mean the small town words
Did they build you up to bring you down
To keep you in that same small town
Are you up for it?
Are you meant for this?

Come on, boy, run
Put your feet down to the ground
Get up and run
Get the hell out of that old small town
Don't look back, don't react to the voices in your head
That said don't run, don't go for it

VERSE 3:
On the road that leads you to
A billion neon city lights
Does your future looks as bright as your dreams
Does it fade?
As your rearview mirror shrinks to show
How comfortable you were at home
Are you up for this?
Can you handle this?

CHORUS

BRIDGE:
Oh you may find when you make up your own mind
The rest will follow
If you've got it inside, you can realize
The rest will follow

CHORUS

Gravity Anne

Written By: Zach Balch

I think she's crazy
About me, I mean, you know
She can't stop falling
She won't stop following me around

Well I've tried to make her go away
But she simply just won't let me be
And I hate to listen to her say
Exactly what she sees in me

She's sort of pretty
But that hardly matters to me
And I guess she's funny
But I'm not really into that kind of thing

Yeah but lately when she smiles at me
It's hard to keep from turning red
And I like the way that she looks at me
And I can't get her out of my head

I guess she's winning
Looks like I'm falling in love with her
It's aggravating that she is making me feel this way

Yeah well she just won't stop pulling down
And I'm afraid that I've done all I can
I've tried to run right off the ground
But I'm no match for Gravity Anne

I think she's crazy
About me, I mean, you know

Follow You Down

Written By: Zach Balch

VERSE 1:
Let's take a walk
Get to know you better
Without the stress of running out of words
Let's talk about our families
And all the things we want to be
And all the things we're afraid we might become

But you know that I'll guide you
When you walk through the shadows
You know I'll save you
When you go through the fire

CHORUS:
I'll follow you down
I'll follow you down

VERSE:
We walk beside one another
With our hands in our pockets
Imaginations running wild a while
We'll awkwardly gaze in each other's eyes
You'll know all my secrets
I'll never know just what page you're on

But you know that I'll guide you
When you walk through your shadows
You know I'll heal you
When you're burned by the fire

CHORUS

BRIDGE:
I never had to try so hard
To be a friend with my whole heart
When all I ever really want to do is love you
So go on down your lonely road
I'll follow with a hand to hold
At a distance, if that's what it takes to love you

CHORUS

Let's take a walk
Get to know you better
Without the stress of running out of words
Let's talk about our families
And all the things we want to be
And all the things we're afraid we might become

We have enough original material to cover a 2 hour set, with a 15 minute break in the middle. We rarely play cover songs, but a few can be arranged if given enough advance notice.
