"Fire and Ice"

“The Quartet offered up a set heavy with original compositions, with a few standards mixed in for good measure. Opening with the standard “Softly as in a Morning Sunrise,” the combo tore through the chart with an intensity greater than any rendition I’ve heard, and kept up this vigor through their entire set. Following with a Zack Lipton original called “104,” a fiery hard-bop piece, the combo sailed headlong through the chart reaching a climax in Lipton’s solo.”
...
“The Quartet offered up a few classic tunes, including two Miles Davis charts, “Four” and “Freddie Freeloader,” as well as the epic and imposing John Coltrane chart “Giant Steps.” All three pieces took on a unique and interesting hue that all but reinvented these jazz staples.”
...
“Many of the original charts the Quartet offered up will soon be available on an album called “First Steps.” If the album is half as inventive and even a fourth as passionate as the performance I saw, it will be a must-have for any respectable jazzer.”
