The best kept secret in music

"Zarna Surti"

On January 7, 2006, there was a lady waiting to perform on the stage at 3rd and Lindsley. Although she looked completely put together, I heard her whisper to her piano player how nervous she really was. It was amazing to see someone that looked like she could conquer the stage without any trouble be genuinely concerned about what she was going to face.

This young ladies name was Zarna Surti and she took the stage that night with originals, jazz standards, and a few Motown covers. She looked completely comfortable when she hit the stage and it almost seemed that all the nervousness that she had as she was pacing backstage had gone away. She seemed most comfortable and outgoing on stage, because as soon as she stepped off, she was a regular nineteen year-old, wondering how she did and if anyone seemed to like what she was doing.

Zarna Surti is one of the many upcoming singer/songwriters in Nashville, TN. However, what sets her apart from everyone else are her original tunes that fuse together Indian music, jazz, and funk. She displayed a very eclectic style and performance that sets her apart from many others that have graced the stage at 3rd and Lindsley. Her album will be dropping later this year and she is definitely a songstress to look out for!

Feeling a bit camera shy

Zarna was born Zarna Tarun Surti on March 3, 1987. Zarna has been a fabulous talent right from the start. She began her musical career early in life with piano at five years old and voice lessons at seven. Her acting career has already spanned close to a decade with roles in school productions along with an appearance in Nashville’s renound TPAC Theatre. Her talent for the arts also led her to follow her love of all kinds of dance, ranging from her native Indian dance to hip hop.

Over the years, Zarna’s love for music became an undeniable passion. With the support of her family, she immersed herself in her music by singing and performing songs that reflected her inner vision of herself. That required Zarna to sing not only her favorite standards, but also to write her own songs which capture the exotic sounds of her Indian heritage and the contemporary themes of her youth.

The result: Fabulous! Her songs ring with the sound of her Indian homeland, and the riveting blend of pop music with her own traditional Indian style result in pure magic. Her original, Indian textures and pop sound combined with her honest yet responsible lyrical touch are impressive for such a young girl.

Zarna has a lot more than just the voice of a star. Her breathtaking live performances are a fusion of the exotic mystery of her past along with the sultry tones and vocal prowess that are pop music today. In an age where young girls are groomed into sticky, sweet packages and vocals are a last minute afterthought, Zarna stands out as an Original. She attended Berklee College of Music last year and is now attending University of Miami, studying Studio Music and Jazz (Vocal). Yes, she is a gorgeous, exotic beauty with riveting stage presence, but when she opens up on stage and translates that beauty into a song, her unique and undeniable talent lifts her to a whole other level.
