Bio
A carpenter by profession, Praia-born Zé Luís moved to São Tomé and Príncipe at four years of age with his family, who were contracted as laborers on the island of Príncipe. It was there that Zé Luís had his first musical experiences, learning songs from the many other Cape Verdean workers on the plantation and assimilating local musical traditions as well. Today, Zé Luís’s repertoire of mornas, coladeiras and mazurkas, which he interprets with his incomparably smooth tenor voice, is considered to be one of the most extensive in the city of Praia.
In addition to countless appearances at events and venues in Cape Verde since the 1980s, Zé Luís performed, as part of the Cape Verde Veterans, in more than ten Dutch cities as a part of the Mundial On Tour itinerant festival in 2008.
