"Zerbin - New Earth"

Today, I received every writers dream; a submission that leaves you awestruck to the point you're empty of words.

In most cases, I'm ready to fire off an article immediately after listening to a musician’s body of work.

In this instance, it's quite the contrary.

In fact, I'd go as far as saying that I'm ill equipped to handle the task at hand.

Fortunately, the Edmonton based alternative/indie rock group comprised of Jason Zerbin & Peter Mol, has made this daunting task infinitely easier to take on.

Upon first glance, I almost decided to discard the Canadian group purely based on "judging a book by it's cover" & not from a place of merit.

Thankfully, I chose not to follow through with the innate human nature I was born with & decided to expand outside of The Place For Things traditional hip-hop roots.

In doing so, I'm happy to showcase a picturesque, & at times, humorous visual that'll stimulate & captivate even the most unyielding of ears.

I strongly encourage each & every viewer to dive in head first to Zerbin's discography. You'll be more than pleased you did. - The Place for Things

"Zerbin channels musical expression"

Zerbin's soaring spiritual anthems possess a sonic gravitas that places them with the best of indie-rock royalty.

Be it debut EP Fools and Gold, or current EP Touch, each arresting Zerbin song flows easily past the ears and into the soul like slice-of-life heart plays.

The band has toured across Canada several times, sharing the stage with Panic at The Disco, Plain White T's, Linkin Park, Awolnation, and The Flaming Lips. They are winning new audiences, rave reviews, and regular radio airplay and appear headed toward stadium-band stardom.

Zerbin won Single of the Year, and Music Video of the Year at the 2012 Edmonton Music Awards, for fan favourite New Earth. Like the heartwarming classic Disney song Heigh-Ho! the happy-go-lucky tune has also gained global exposure as the trailer song for Walking With Dinosaurs. New Earth was also used as a life affirming sentiment in a Coffee Mate commercial in the United States.

Other Zerbin songs have served as stirring musical accents for many films and television shows.

Maybe it's because lyricist Jason Zerbin, with a passion for philosophy and theology, likes to ponder the purpose of life using artistic elements of sound and vision.

"For me music is about capturing a soul, almost like creating a painting in sound and textures. There are a lot of visuals associated with that in mind, almost like colours and flavours as we create."

Zerbin and Peter Mol, multi-instrumentalists from Edmonton, began as a duo in 2009. They eventually transitioned into a changing musical collective, including band pals Derek Gust and Nick West.

In terms of its visual identity, Zerbin's lush romantic sound is beautifully illustrated in all of its music videos. Lift, is a bittersweet love dance set to a stunning B.C. wilderness backdrop featuring Zerbin's haunting vocals and a gorgeous mandolin refrain.

New Earth features a quirky stop action version of Jason Zerbin bouncing about in the woods, enjoying a Mad Hatter-esque tea party, and reciting German author Else Ury's best loved children's stories to a magically animated Old-World toy entourage.

Zerbin laughs and admits though it can be "cheesy," he carries this sense of whimsy in his subconscious. On a more serious note, he says the visual aspect of a song is necessary because a music-video single is the "No. 1 way" people consume songs. - TheRecord.com

"[CMW] Kongos, Zerbin and Dear Rogue @ The Opera House 5/8/2014"

Even if the name Zerbin doesn’t ring a bell, odds are you have heard their songs before, as evidenced by smartphones trying to shazaam songs in the set. The BC band, with Jason Zerbin and Peter Moi as the original nucleus, impressed those gathered with their roaring anthems from EPs Fool’s Gold and Touch. The multi-instrumentalism and soaring vocals amplified the trio’s sound that could fill corners of arenas. Even the band’s whistling skills was marvelous in the set closer ‘New Earth’, where Moi’s whistling could put Marc Foster’s whistling bridge during ‘Pumped Up Kicks’ to shame. - Ride the Tempo

Bio

Touch (EP) encapsulates
the lead-up to Edmonton/Victoria-based Zerbin’s anticipated sophomore record
(coming September 2014). It sits in the moment between two frames of film, a
superimposing of what’s been and what is about to be. “Take Your Heart” and
title track “Touch” are marked by a straightforward stadium rock sound that’s
reminiscent of UK’s alt-rock pioneers - a sound that epitomized Zerbin’s early
aspirations. However, songs like the fan favorite “Lift” and chart-rising “New
Earth” open up a more accessible side of the band; one that embraces both
anthem and whimsy.

Both a move from the prairies to Canada’s West Coast and an evolution in band
members have brought about the solidifying of Zerbin’s creative core.
Multi-instrumentalists Jason Zerbin and Peter Mol form the writing and
production nucleus that is embodied live by a collective of talented musicians.
Together they create the anthemic sound that Zerbin is known for.

Formed in Edmonton in 2009, this all-Canadian band have wowed fans and industry
folk with their debut LP “Of Fools And Gold”.  Since then, Zerbin has
toured across North America, shared stages with the likes of The Flaming Lips,
FUN., Said the Whale, KONGOS, Panic! At The Disco, MGMT, and AWOLNATION – and cemented their status as a
band to watch.

Boasting remarkable musical chops, the band has carved out some fantastic
anthemic tunes and symphonic organic rock – they’ve even managed to debut on
the Top 40 on the Modern Rock charts and Top 25 on CCHR.  Not settling for
mere sing song memorability, Zerbin manages to provide lyrical and musical
moments of sentiment and spirituality.  It was this musical prowess that
landed them two 2012 Edmonton Music Awards for Music Video of the Year and
Single of the Year.

Their songs have been featured in numerous movies and television shows,
appearing in both independent and large-scale productions including the film Going
The Distance
and the television hits
America’s Next Top Model
and Degrassi.  In 2013, their track ‘New Earth‘ gained large scale exposure
in The United States by being featured in a national Coffee-Mate television
advertising campaign and received worldwide attention when used in a 20th
Century Fox television trailer for the feature film Walking with Dinosaurs.
