"The Buffalo News"

The band started setting up various microphone stands, equalizers and a drum set that would even make Rush drummer Neil Peart jealous. ZNR (the band for the evening) opened its set with Steve Miller’s “Space Cowboy.” It had a positive effect on the Saturday crowd, which seemed like a 97 Rock sort of crew. Gender-wise, the split was incredibly 50/50, with lots of eligible bachelors and bachelorettes. ZNR brought the noise with a cover of Stealers Wheel’s Dylanesque “Stuck in the Middle with You.” The band kicked into second gear with an admirable version of the Rolling Stones’ “Sympathy for the Devil.” Thanks in large part to audience request, the band then regaled us with the Beastie Boys’ “Fight for Your Right (to Party).”

Bio

The four members of ZNR are a mixed collection of experienced players and up-and-coming musicians. This lineup boasts strong rhythms and melodies driven by a very versatile drummer, solid guitar players, and powerful vocals. All four members share a similar taste in music, and that ever-forward attitude to do anything and everything to make the songs work. From electric to acoustic, from atmospheric to edgy, their music is emotional, powerful, and colorful.

Musicians:
Tom Wirth – Lead Guitar/Vocals – 32 – Tom is an experienced guitarist with over 15 years under his helm. His guitar playing is solid and powerful, and his vocals provide a hard-edged facet to the music. Tom has performed on stage for 8+ years, previously with Buffalo rock band Sterling Park. With Sterling Park, he opened for such national acts as The Trews and The Headstones. He has great stage presence, and is excellent with crowd interaction.

Derek McKinnon – Lead Vocals/Guitar – 26 – Derek is a natural musician and promising vocalist. Vocally, Derek is versatile, and can easily switch from hard rock to sweet melodies, while still giving a unique flavor to every song. He has 12+ years of experience on guitar, and was playing on stage by the age of 16. Derek often uses a variety of guitar effects to add texture to his solid rhythms and melodic leads.

Wil Wirth – Bass – 28 – Wil is a solid bassist that shows clear-cut musical skill. Whether he’s layering an atmospheric bass line behind a verse or locking with the kick drum to get people dancing, Wil provides a concrete backbone to Zero Nerve Response. Additionally, he is an entertaining individual to watch, and a sight to behold on stage.

Gary Sawning – Drums/Vocals – 37 – Gary is a veteran in the music business. He has been drumming his whole life, and has played all sorts of venues in Nashville, Virginia Beach, and Buffalo. He has played with many bands, and has opened for national acts Creedence Clearwater Revival, Chuck Berry, Sammy Kershaw, Phil Vassor, and John Cafferty. He has played with renowned Buffalo acts such as The JC Thompson Band, Chain Reaction, Sterling Park, and The Barb Wire Band. Gary’s drumming is powerful, professional, and energetic.

ZNR's influences include The Beatles, Green Day, Nirvana, Our Lady Peace, Oasis, Third Eye Blind, Bush, Institute, Foo Fighters, Nickelback, and Metallica.
