"Tango puts on young face"

Local band Zigatango rarely get noise complaints when they practise at their parents' houses. They are even allowed in the lounge room, instead of the garage. Zigatango is not a stereotypical band of 25-year-olds. They specialise in traditional gypsy music and Argentinean tango.

The band with Richard Watson on accordion, Geoffrey Pearce on violin, Siobhan Finn on viola, and Justin Story on guitar, live in the western suburbs and have all studied at the University of WA. They recently launched their self-titled CD at Kulcha in Fremantle.

"This is our debut CD, we are definitely excited about it," Richard said. "It's unusual for a young group of people to play this music - tango is usually for an older aged group. "We like to think we've added a youthful flair to the music. We've played at several festivals and local gigs and had really good feedback."
He said the band formed in 2006 and had a common love for gypsy and Argentinean tango.
"We've been playing together for about a year and are still in the early stages," he said.
They met through the classical musical circuit and stumbled across Justin at the Fairbridge Festival.
"Siobhan and I played with the WA Youth Orchestra for many years and Geoffrey and I have played in string quartets, Richard said. He said they adapted arrangements to their style and were inspired by Astor Piazzolla, who revolutionised tango music.

Zigatango performs around Perth and Fremantle, and often incorporates juggling, dancing and magic tricks into their act. For information or to buy a CD for $20, visit www.zigatango.com or email zigatango@gmail.com

Bio

Formed in early 2006, the band has accumulated a diverse repertoire which includes arrangements of fiery Gypsy melodies from Eastern Europe, together with the tangos of the Argentinean Astor Piazzolla – combining the irresistible energy of traditional dance music with a sense of melancholy, drama and passion. With occasional forays into folk and jazz (and even 70s rock), Zigatango is bound to appeal to anyone with a taste for the exciting and unusual.

In early 2008, Zigatango received a WAMi nomination in the category of World Music. A few months later they recorded their first album, which was featured local album of the week on RTR-FM.

Zigatango has given performances at several local venues, including the Fremantle Arts Centre, Little Creatures Loft, Subi Series Concert and Kulcha. During 2007 and 2008, Zigatango performed at a number of festivals – including Fairbridge Folk Festival – on occasion collaborating with the gifted young juggler Alex Duhig and Gypsy dancer Ivanna Mayorenko. They've also attracted the talents of a variety of other musicians, including the newest band member Greg Coles. Together, they continue to perform around Perth, at festivals and other special events.
