Since I was 10, I’ve been deconstructing songs – figuring out how they work, like a watchmaker takes apart watches. I’ve studied everyone from Elvis Costello to Stephen Sondheim to Belle and Sebastian to Paul Simon to Dave Frishberg. The Internet has made it possible for me to put my words out to an audience of songwriters and to find collaborators in several countries. Ten years ago I would not have been able to win an international prize with a partner in Kazakhstan.
