Bio

From the very day the home organ was delivered to his folks’ house in the late ’70s, Mark has been experimenting with and composing his music. He originally studied under the local Austrian “roll out the barrels…” organ teacher but most of his creative adventures were self inflicted.

Shortly thereafter with the purchase of his first portable electronic piano Mark joined together with school mates and started his first combo playing covers and slowly introduced his own brand of songs. Soon he was involved with synthesizers such that the path to his future had been cleared.

He played in a number of original bands in Melbourne during the heyday of the synth-pop genre in the early eighties. This era saw the evolution of the music sequencer, drum machine and most significantly MIDI. Mark was engrossed with the technology and soon developed from composer to arranger, programmer and producer.

Moving to Sydney in 1988 Mark found employment in the music technology field and has been there ever since. He has just completed a Masters degree in music technology, and achieved the qualification of “with Distinction”. His last project is www.songrighter.com.au

In terms of creative diversity, Mark writes in many styles from country to Aussie rock, from synth-pop to stage musical, with a strong emphasis on lyrical content. Over the years he has collected a range of vintage instruments that are found in his private studio where he composes and produces tracks for fellow artists. See www.billychina.com.au for production and compositional examples…And yes you guessed it ‘Billy China’ was his eighties pseudonym!

He currently collaborates with a number of fellow musicians often via the internet.

For many years his songwriting has mostly been a personal creative outlet but now he is determined to share his gift with the world.
