A musical hybrid with composite influences : live electro, deep dub, raging punk and futuristic maloya.
This invention is called Zong, a trio of individuals that is constantly polishing a unique sound.
“Fractures”, their new opus, was created in the heart of an island that is in perpetual movement and
explores every possibility.
First of all, Zong is Drean, the sculptural and tenacious singer who takes the stage by storm. When she
plays her kayamb, a traditional percussion from her native island, she becomes one with the instrument.
Next, it’s the voice, or rather the voices of this “white Creole” that take center stage. Zong’s singer is not
a “good little girl”- she lulls you, then whips you into a frenzy. She screams her rage and follows with
murmured incantations with explicit lyrics in French, English and Creole. Has she calmed down since the
arrival of her son, Maceo, two years ago? Not likely…but the lyrics of “Fractures” reveal a new acuity and
sensitivity that suits her well.
Zong’s sound is also Yann Costa. A trained classical pianist, he rushes headlong into the boiling cauldron
of 90’s electro, leaving written scores behind. Underworld, Roni Size, Squarepusher…his fascination with
electronic music and his passion for vintage instruments and effects make him a unique case. For Zong,
Costa pushes his own
limits and those of his machines. “L’enfant sage” pianist gets radical and becomes a producer of organic
and crazy electro, who never refuses an adrenaline rush or a controlled loss of control. Zong owes its the
musical conception to Costa, surrounded by a Fender Rhodes, a TB 303, a melodica and improbable
effects. Foggy dub or flying punk…on stage, nothing escapes his wizardry.
In spite of his calm character, the third member of Zong is nicknamed Fever. Once the man is behind his
drum kit, he turns into a crazy organic machine who always uses his virtuosity towards serving the
music. Longtime friend and rhythmic alter ego of Costa, the originality of Zong’s sound owes a lot to
Fever. Fascinated by the energy of punk, the impossible syncopation of drum n’ bass and the precision of
the greatest jazz rock drummers, Fever is the gardien of Zong’s oblique groove. For him, creation is
everything. The easy way out is not an option.
Zong’s path is nourished with a new element. Born in total artistic freedom, it’s called “Fractures”. It is
the perfect reflection of a group that will always refuse compromise and labels. A trio made in the image
of the Reunion Island of today- violent and beautiful.
