Formed in Ottawa, Canada in 2010, Zoo Legacy is a band that can only be described as the successful union of hip-hop and alternative rock. Consisting of rapper Nick Pouponneau and multi-instrumentalists Dominic and Sam Goss, the band’s music appeals to hip-hop fans and rock fans alike, providing them with a sound they haven’t heard before. While not easy to pinpoint, fans have described the band’s style as a mash-up of KiD CuDi and The xx.
The Goss brothers’ skill at creating art with a number of instruments, from shining guitar riffs to haunting piano chords, chest thumping beats to contagious melodies, allows Pouponneau free reign to do what he does best – catchy rhymes and melodic hooks. ZL’s music isn’t characterized by any single tempo or song structure, but rather offers listeners variety. Whether an upbeat crowd pleaser, moody synth-driven rap, or thoughtful acoustic verse, the band’s music maintains a recognizable style that is unique to Zoo Legacy.
Currently unsigned, Zoo Legacy has released five singles on their website (www.thezoolegacy.com) over the past eight months. The band has played a number of live shows and promotional radio spots so far in 2011, and is looking to continue growing their fan base, while finishing their debut mix-tape in studio – set to drop at the end of the summer.
