23. Zulu Winter. - NME

New music from London is coming to us through the hands and voices of Zulu Winter. While we are still figuring out, if the band name rather refers to a Scottish or South-African season, their very first song got us (and should get you) immediately. The nicely arranged and mellow “Let’s Move Back to Front” makes it quite easy for you to love it and doesn’t seem to want you leave again too soon. Two of the yet unknown band member’s also write under the monikers (or real names) Dom and Henry over at ZW’s own blog.

In an age where good band names are few and far between, I think Zulu Winter is pretty solid. And with little else to go on at this moment of writing, thats about it for a descriptive intro.

So here we are, new track by a new band (East London I'm presuming?). "Lets Move Back To Front" has obvious inspirations straight from the off. The initial hits of the drums may have you checking you didn't miss a couple of letters and pressed play to Wild Beasts by mistake. Delicate guitars, and the high falsetto-like, yearning vocals are there too, albeit with a Southern twang attached.

As "Back To Front" reaches its zenith (approaching the three minute mark) I've already made sure I'm ready to press 'repeat' once again, you?

It's early days, but the foundations are in place for something promising. And with more songs on the way, I've no doubt you'll want to stay with us. - 1 For The People

Meticulous, clean-cut, and moody pop form London's Zulu Winter, "Let's Move Back To Front" introduces itself with a soaring falsetto over sparkling guitar chords and a playful drum jerk. The mood gradually darkens with its introduction of ominous, echoing of drums halfway through and an intensifying crescendo of windy ooooo’s with line dancing saxophones and a dramatic vocal refrain. --Noam Klar, Don't Die Wondering

We always remember, from our days playing in bands, the amount of time and energy that was put into finding a great band name was almost more than that spent on writing actual songs. Trying to find quirky lines from films, song lyrics or scrawling through the thesaurus to use some overly-pretentious word never seemed to work; but our latest Track Of The Day offering has found themselves a gem. Zulu Winter is one of the best bands names we’ve heard in a while, and unsurprisingly they back this up with some equally-stanced musical ability. There isn’t a huge amount of information online about these guys (despite the great lengths you know we go to research these buggers), apart from they hail from London; they write a self-named blog about music, art, books and other intelligent cultural stuff that, according to their Twitter, is better than “yours” (meaning we have business with these dudes); and above all they have decided to offer up their debut track, ‘Let’s Move Back To Front’ via this blogging medium. An atmospheric, steady builder of a song, with dreamy delayed guitars, solid simple drum beat (with some good use of cow bell) bolstered together with gliding falsetto vocals. It reminds us in parts of MGMT crossed with a more ethereal and ballsy Coldplay, thus rendering the impossible into the popular. Comparisons aside, this is a thudding great song and certainly one we’ll be playing over the summer months and beyond – we’ve fingers, toes and general streams crossed for a couple of shows in London before summer is out.
