"Stradaniya" (Suffering)

Feeling a bit camera shy

If we ask any foreigner what Russian folk music sounds like, he's likely to recall "babushkas" in kerchiefs. Nowadays the "babushka" songs are performed in unexpectedly fresh arrangements by young and bright girls. The ancient authentic music gets a new wind.

That’s exactly what is done by musicians of Zventa Sventana band – a Moscow project of Tina Kuznetsova & Alena Romanova. The girls founded the band in 2006 after conducting several ethnographic expeditions to the Central Russia villages, where they collected material for the debut album. The "Stradaniya" CD included authentic folk love songs. Next to Tina & Alena there are best Russian musicians performing onstage. Zventa Sventana compositions combine the brightest and richest elements of the original music Russia is proud of, modern r-n-b and jazz arrangement. This rhythmical, groovy, vibrant music made by means of both contemporary and archaic instruments, invigorates the audience and throws them into a dance.

Zventa Sventana music is definitely something that a European listener, not listless to real audial pleasure, is going to associate with Russia. Zventa Sventana can positively be as strong national brand as "Katyusha" song is. In a word, Zventa Sventana is not only an unexpected way of traditional culture revival, but a phenomenon worth international, if not global, attention.
