Bearded Chieftains formed in Ellisville, MS, where members Zach Gregore, Chris Hartfield, RJ Hughes, and Jacob Moore are all currently studying music industry at Jones College. The band was born when Hartfield (vocals/guitar/lyricist) asked Gregore to be a session drummer on a track he intended to shop to Nashville country producers. Hughes, who also played in the jazz band with Gregore and Hartfield, accompanied the two to the recording session. After completing the track, the three showed the tune to their professor, who is an accomplished songwriter, producer, and engineer. He told them bluntly, “This is not a country tune. This needs to be rock.” The three members decided to track three more tunes before recruiting bassist Moore.
Their sound is a return to organic rock, but marinated in funk, blues, and soul. Hartfield’s lyrics are razor sharp, and they tackle issues including aging, substance abuse, domestic violence, and suicide prevention.
