This outstanding nine piece band is incredible. They are very similar to some of the power house bands like Chicago, or Earth Wind and Fire. The music hits you as soon as they start. There is tremendous energy that comes with this crew. It is very difficult to sit still, the sound soaks right into your soul. exciting the very essence of your being. - Red Dragon TV

Attention rockers: the ballots are in, and this year's winner of Isthmus' Band to Band Combat is ...

The Big Payback!
The Frequency was packed with music fans and a wide variety of sounds Thursday night as The Big Payback was selected by the audience to receive 20 hours of recording time at Madison's Blast House Studios.
This year, Band to Band Combat started with a pool of 35 bands and was narrowed down to four after a series of eliminations decided by over 1,000 online voters. Originally created to lend some much deserved attention to up-and-coming local acts, the contest has increased in scope and musical stylings, with this year's field one of the most diverse yet.
The Big Payback is a nine-piece funk and soul group that features a horn ensemble and one truly sassy singer. Their full sound, not unlike the origin of their James Brown-related moniker, incorporates a saxophone, trumpet and trombone to create a scene that had most of the audience feeling good, like The Big Payback knew they would. The prevailing act inspired dancing and early trips to the ballot box.
Runners-up included El Valiente, Sky Road Fly and TL;DR, who each mobilized their own fan bases and won over a few converts as well. Each performance was completely different from the one before, displaying an array of genres and a true representation of what Madison's music scene has to offer. Though good-natured and appreciative of each other, the talent was unrelenting which made for a memorable night. - The Isthmus

Bio
The Big Payback is an award-winning Funk/Rock/R&B band featuring the soulful vocals of Leah Isabel Tirado and a smoking horn section. Both the band’s hard-hitting originals and classic covers get the crowd dancing, energizing them just as much as the musicians themselves. With an infectious appeal that cuts across generations, Payback is a party you won’t want to miss.
The band burst onto the Madison music scene by winning Isthmus’ Band to Band Combat in 2011. That same year, they released Overture, their debut album, which won three Madison Area Music Awards (MAMAs) in 2012. Their 2013 single “Romeo Knows” became a finalist for the 2014 MAMAs Jazz Song of the Year. In 2014, Jazz at Five featured the group on its main stage, and the band is currently in the process of recording its second album. Over the past five years, The Big Payback’s infectious sound and high-energy show have made the band a tried-and-true favorite.
The Big Payback brings together some of the Midwest’s finest musicians, who can also be heard performing with Youngblood Brass Band, Harmonious Wail, Steely Dane, Weapons of Mass Defunktion, Grupo Candela, and Vic Ferrari’s Symphony on the Rocks. The band’s ambitious original tunes highlight the virtuosity of each instrumentalist. In addition, The Payback proudly teaches, giving performances and delivering master classes at schools and universities throughout the Midwest.
