By Beeb Ashcroft

The twangy folk-rock melodies of Mr. Adams' Blues are at once ear-catching and finely executed. Nix's songwriting is classic and memorable, and he proves himself to be an equally good storyteller. Listening to this album, you feel more like you're sitting on his porch than in front of a CD player. The songs are personal and real, and guide you through tales of love and loss.

A rumination on the passing of time, "History" is a retrospective ballad of days gone by, with the vocals capturing a warm sound with a rich, almost nostalgic quality. In a similar vein is "Long Gone," which talks remorsefully about the departure of a lover over a catchy folk rhythm. But it's not all heartbreak - "Louisiana" is a fun, upbeat cut with a catchy hook. "Straight But True," one of my favorites on the album, features some stellar riffs and playing.

Nix continues to show his prowess on the guitar on standout acoustic instrumental, "Sitting Here." I also enjoyed the acoustic version of "Things I Can't Say" and the A&D mix of "Bringing It Home" - this stripped-down version has a raw, intimate feeling to it. Perhaps he should release a Blake Nix: Unplugged album.

Nix's songs have a timeless quality to them, with a sentiment and structure that pays tribute to the classics while remaining relevant. His instrumentation is spot-on, and makes this album a pleasure to listen to - Mr. Adams' Blues is a keeper.

Bio

Blake is a singer/songwriter/guitar player based out of Huntsville, Alabama. Blake's music draws from a diverse array of influences but typically reminds listeners of the Beatles and of newer alt country/Americana artists like Ryan Adams. He is currently preparing for a new record, due out later in 2016.

The songs on his 2009 album 'Mr Adams' Blues' were mined from the years of travel; cassettes, mp3 player/recorders, notebooks and a veritable grocery aisle of restaurant napkins. Mr. Adams' Blues encapsulates the journey of love, loss, and the reflection that comes when it's all "long gone."

Says Blake, "Each song on the album stands on its own, but there's a story there if you listen from start to finish. There's a longing portrayed in the first few songs, which is briefly resolved before turning to feelings of regret and loss by the end of the album."

With an accessible yet reflective sound, Mr. Adams' Blues is the kind of album that lends itself to both first and repeated listens.
