"Boostive In-Store: A Photo Recap"

There’s no way around it. Boostive tore the roof off the joint the other night. In celebration of First Friday, the local dubhop band played an in-store set that had people pouring in the door, dancing in the aisles and bobbing their heads in delight. There is no doubt that these guys are going to make quite a splash in our little beach town. If you’re already a Boostive believer, catch the band’s next show at the Catalyst on March 8. - Streetlight SC

"Boostive"

A few weeks ago, seven experimental trip-hoppers could be seen walking the streets of Market and 6th in San Francisco. SAGE, the producer, bassist, and founder of this all-male collective of students, called Boostive, refers to that area as “the ghetto” and “the crack block.” But beneath the tough exterior is the group’s studio. For SAGE, the streets provide “that vibe of being real—that whole vibe is going to be in our album just from recording there.” Their self-titled EP marks the debut of SAGE’s collaboration with several friends: Dylan Webber (guitar), Nathan Kocivar (saxophone, keys), Andrew Hawes (drums), Mulligan B (engineer, guitar), Travis Gibbs (trombone), and Al Bundi (MC). “We use a lot of vinyl chops to get our sound and overdub some real instruments and drums,” says Sage. “The vinyl [is] for old school sound [such as] ’90s hip-hop. You can hear the crackle of the records in our recordings …

it gives it a nice, warm tone.” This vintage feel prevails on every track, even though their music is always in the minor key. Sage does this by design, preferring minor over major due to its grave impact. “It makes you feel good, but it’s not happy-sounding,” he explains. The must-hear track “Boostive in ‘Orphan Christmas’” is the embodiment of this dual sound. Its seven minutes of ambient, dub reggae with broody basslines, keys and melancholy sax is paired with snippets from a 1950s television program in which a housewife relates her LSD-induced epiphanies to a doctor. The clever combination of hip-hop beats with samples borrowed from films, television, and other artists is the group’s signature. And their influences—J Dilla, the Wu-Tang Clan, the Twinkle Brothers, Pink Floyd, and DJ Bonobo—shine through. “There’s not just one artist that we like to dwell on while we do our own thing,” says Sage.

"Boostive Plays Santa Cruz Waves Company Party"

It was a perfect Friday for friends and colleagues to enjoy a back yard BBQ. Everyone brought a little something to share. Boostive brought the beats to inspire us to groove. The fire pit gave us just enough light to see. It was a reminder of years past. Of parties from high school or collage days. Except we are all a bit wiser now. It may be the ending of summer, but the fun does have to end. - Santa Cruz Waves

Boostive's massive sound is the product of seven young musician's unique musical influences. Drawing from elements from everything from gritty hip hop to ambient electronic and back world music, they create a powerful trance-like atmosphere for their audiences and easily fit in to any kind of musical setting. Originally started by four lifelong friends in san diego, a move to Santa Cruz brought the missing pieces of the puzzle with the addition of the last three members. The recording of the self titled EP in 2012 signified they were ready to begin playing shows professionally. Since then, boostive has taken off and even had the pleasure of playing numerous music festivals and opening up for some of their most respected influences like Heiroglyphics, The Pharcyde, Souls of Mischief, Slightly Stoopid, Del tha Funkee Homosapien, Zion i, and Gramatik. The group now gigs around California regularly and is constantly creating new material, keeping the spirit and energy alive and changing. With a full length album recorded and on the way to being released and the release of their second EP "Feed the People"(2014), boostive is moving forward with their momentum every day.
