"Revival!, “Now Is The Time” (Independent)"

There is a quality to Southern rock music that gives it a constant upward current. The Allman Brothers Band had it. The Tedeschi Trucks Band has it. Revival! does too, and their name says it all. Of course we’re talking about gospel. Now Is the Time is a collection of seven covers that are securely Southern, soulful, and gospel-influenced. When you’ve got two songs made famous by the Staple Singers, there’s no question where your influence comes from.

Carolyn Broussard is center-stage on this album, but you can tell she’s a team player. Her vocals, despite their power, do not over-extend. She blends naturally with the backing vocals and instrumentation from the band. You can tell she’s really listening to them. A less-measured singer in the same milieu might think that more is more and verge into wailing territory on some of these songs.

The rest of the band have that same cohesive gentleness. The result is a feeling of lightness and warmth that flows through the album. “Satisfied Mind” is the only song on the disc to diverge from that feeling, the guitars cutting loose and the ensemble playing with loud/quiet and stop/start dynamics. Kinda like the Pixies went south.

"Your 2017 New Orleans Music Buying Guide, Part 2"

Revival! – Carolyn Broussard is the best reason to pick up Now is the Time – the title pulled from the lyrics of Allen Toussaint’s “Yes We Can Can” covered on the album. She gets excellent support from her fellow band members with their bluesy soul vibe, but every time I hear her singing in “Sweet Inspiration” and the Temptation’s “I Can’t Get Next to You,” I kick myself for missing the band’s Thursday evening gig at Cafe Negril the last time I was in New Orleans. - Sweeney's Gumbo YaYa

"Desperate English Housewife in Washington, chapter 466"

Next up, a blues type bar showing a band that really blew me away called REVIVAL. This girl has a voice! The band was tight, talented and very funny. Shivers down the spine, folks. A homeless guy stood watching and he was moved to full on tears by this girl cos she had soul. - ukdesperatehousewifeusa

Bio

Carolyn Broussard has one of those voices that makes you turn your head and take notice. In her 10 years on the New Orleans music scene she has distinguished herself as one of the most versatile and sought-after singers in New Orleans today. Originally hailing from New Iberia and beginning her training as an opera singer, she has become a force to be reckoned with in the fast-growing NolAmericana scene.

At one of Carolyn’s shows you will see her playing guitar and ukulele and singing a wide range of songs, covers ranging from Fastball to Mavis Staples and her exciting original songs that sound as if you’ve known them for years. She surrounds herself with extremely talented musicians and allows them to shine, whether taking lead on vocals, singing in 4-part vocal harmony, or blowing the audience away with instrumental solos. And underlying it all is the vibe of an extended family event, where you’ve never met a stranger and are left with the positive feeling that we’re all in this together and life is good.

In addition to her self-titled project, Carolyn can also be found playing washboard with Truman Hollan’s Back Porch Revue and singing with Colin Davis and Night People.
