"Interview with Coco Rubio"

Q&A with CoCo | The Verge presents Celia Gary
COCO'S Q&A with CELIA GARY
VERGE / DECEMBER 2012

------

Coco: Where are you from and what is your musical background?
Celia: I usually just tell people that I am from Illinois because that is where my fondest memories are from. When I was about 12 years old, living in Illinois, I wanted to learn how to play the guitar. I was inspired by the female musician Avril Lavigne. I saved up all of my money to buy an electric guitar and started my musical journey the minute I purchased that guitar. I began writing, singing, and playing all on my own all at the same time.

Coco: So, Avril inspired you at 12 years old.... who inspires you now?
Celia: Now I am very inspired by Sharon Van Etten and Kina Grannis. These are two semi underground artists who I'd love to be as successful as. Sharon Van Etten has a very soothing quality to her music and has very real lyrics as does Kina Grannis but Kina is doing her music career without a record label. She has so many youtube fans that she doesn't need a label to be successful. Since she doesn't have a record label involved in her career she can continue to be completely genuine in her writing and has fun control over most of her career which is very rare but really great in my opinion.

Coco: What brought you to Augusta?
Celia: My mom brought me here. I was having some family issues in high school and ended making the move to Augusta to be closer with my mom. It was a big move and a tough choice but I think it has been well worth it. I have really been able to start my music career here and have had lots of support. I couldn't ask for a better start than here in augusta.

Coco: Where did you go to high school? Are you doing the college thing?
Celia: As I mentioned before my high school years where kind of crazy. We moved around a lot and I ended up going to three different high schools around the US. I ended up graduating from North Augusta High School in 2009 though. I am doing the college thing. I think education is important as well as having a backup plan/bettering yourself for your future. I am now a Senior at USCA with a psychology degree. Many people think that may have been a bad choice but honestly, I disagree. Psychology is a broad major and having people skills can be beneficial in many industries. I have learned a lot about people, business, and public speaking in college. I think college has and will continue to benefit me in the future with my music career.

Coco: Where do you like to play in town?
Celia: I really enjoy playing where ever I can in town. By far, out of all the venues that I have had opportunities to play at, I really enjoy the newer venue M.A.D. Studios. It is a family friendly venue that is non-smoking and it has a very relaxing atmosphere that compliments my music. They have smaller and more intimate shows that are usually acoustic so I fit right in. I feel very welcomed by John Stoney Cannon, Brian Allen, and Leah Deslandes who run the venue. I actually haven't played a lot of venues downtown but I hope to get more opportunities as I continue my music career.

Coco: Tell us about your new album...
Celia: This is one of my biggest accomplishments so far in my life. This is something I have wanted since I was a little 12 year old girl. I have put so much work, money, and time into this EP and I am so excited to release it to the public. Since I have built a loyal fan base and have a lot of material I decided to release an EP before I release an album because many people seemed interested in owning some of my original songs. I began recording with Shawn Guess and had John DeSousa accompanying me on the bass. I was really exciting having my songs recorded. I picked some crowd favorites to include on the EP but also added two newer songs that people may be less familiar with to keep it exciting. I named this EP 'Harmony'. I chose it for very basic reasons. I like simple words, they are easy to understand and sometimes have the best mental pictures. Harmony is a simple word that sounds nice to the ear. Also, there are multiple meanings tied to this word. My songs have underlying meanings to them but people may interpret them differently just as people may interpret the word Harmony in many different ways. I designed the artwork for this album but had much help from my good friends Degan Cheek and Maria LaRocca who are both phenomenal graphic artists and know a lot about the different softwares and such. I have had so much help and support from many of my friends, fans, and family. I am so appreciative of their help. This is such an exciting moment in my life. I just hope people like what they hear. They can look me up at www.celiasmusic.com

Coco: What are some local bands you like?
Celia: One of my favorites is She and She. I think they sound amazing and have a true passion for what they do. They are very inspirational to me and I think - Coco Rubio

"Rising Star Peforms at Helga’s Pub and Grille"

Celia Gary, Indie Artist and North Augusta resident, will perform her hit songs at Helga’s Pub and Grille located on 2015 Central Ave in Augusta, G.A., on Friday Oct. 12 at 10pm. She will perform songs from her upcoming extended play, EP, titled Harmony.

Celia says an EP ranges from four to six songs, and her EP will have 5 songs. She will perform one of her favorite songs from the EP, called “Leaving Me Hanging” , which will be on her upcoming album.

The album will be promoted on her website,celiasmuisc.com and released in a few months on Amazon, iTunes, and Bandcamp.com. The title will be one of the songs listed on her EP and sung Friday at Helga’s. She has been working on her album for months, but has been writing songs since the age of 12. As a solo independent artist, she has no band only a guy who plays base for her in the studio.

She records her music with the producer and music teacher at Rock Bottom Music, Shawn Guess who has a studio in Aiken, S.C. Celia has performed in many places, 100 Laurens and the Playoffs which are both in Aiken, and The Cotton Patch in Augusta, G.A. to name a few.

Celia is a Senior Psychology major at the University of South Carolina Aiken, and if she is not performing she is studying. She has traveled as far as North Carolina to perform, but she hopes to travel farther.

Alesha J: (WXFG Blog Journalist): What are your dream goals and how do you describe success?:

Celia: My dream would be, to become a touring artist, have people love my music, and come to my shows, because I can perform forever. My idea of success is to achieve my personal goals. My goal is to become a touring artist, and making that happen would be my idea of success.

Alesha J: Though being a traveling independent artist is your dream, have you ever considered signing with a major recording label?:

Celia: No, I would like to sign with an independent label, major labels do not always let you do what you want to do, and I want to be very real.

Alesha J: What is one thing you like and dislike about the music industry? :

Celia: I really don’t know enough about it, but I do know I have to be cautious and just work with the right people, I heard it can be all about the money.

Alesha J: If you could choose any artist to record with, who would it be?:

Celia: I have no idea, but I know I want genuine people.

Alesha J: How many bands have you recorded with?:

Celia: None, I would like to have own backup band, but still be a solo artist, like Nora Jones. I want to keep my name.

Alesha J: Where can we see you perform?:

Celia: Everywhere, I usually perform in downtown Aiken or in Augusta. I find places to perform from people and attending shows. I was in the Amped contest in Augusta, G.A. and I made second place, and the final performance was at Arts in the Hearts.

In the beginning I submitted my demo to the Augusta Chronicle newspaper and I competed against 35 people then against 6 people, and from there the public could vote on my demo by going to the Augusta Chronicle website, and that was one of my biggest accomplishments.

Alesha J: How would you describe your genre of music?:

Celia: Acoustic Indie. I made it up because I play the acoustic guitar, and I can’t really relate my songs to pop or rock, its indie because my music can be a wide range of genres. My songs are not really slow, they are different things and I play with different chords and progressions.

Alesha J: What is the message behind your music, and what would you like for people to take from it ? :

Celia: My songs are like my musical journals, I say what I am feeling. I write songs about different things. When you listen to a song and you are going through a bad break, you hear the song and not feel alone. I want people to listen to my music and not feel alone.

Alesha J: How old were you when you started singing?:

Celia: I was 12 when I started singing, and I dreamed of being a rock star. My parents thought it was unrealistic but it’s my passion and I just started performing nine months ago.

Alesha J: You are young and energetic, would you mind telling how old are you, and where you are from?:

Celia: I am 21 years old and where I am from is tricky. My parents are not in the military, but I lived in Wisconsin, and I can’t remember my experiences there. I have not lived in one place for long. I lived in Crystal Lake, Illinois which is five minutes from Chicago and I lived there for five years, then I moved to North Carolina and lived there for a year when I was in high school, but I have lived in North Augusta, South Carolina, for almost six years.

Alesha J: Where there any difficulties moving from place to place? And how was that experience in high school? :

Celia: Yes, when I moved from Illinois to North Carolina, it was kind of hard meeting people. I made close friends in North Carolina, but only stayed there a year. I went to North Augusta, South Carolina the summe - Alesha Jones

"Celia Gary Finds “Harmony”"

On Friday November 30th young area singer-songwriter Celia Gary will present not one, but TWO CD release shows at M.A.D. Studios in celebration of her official debut ep “Harmony.” While it has been a few years since Gary first picked up a guitar, it’s only been the past year or so that she has taken a serious slant on music. Since making that decision Gary has been ruthless booking and playing gig after gig, gabbing new fan after new fan, and creating song after song. One of these songs even helped vault her to second place in this year’s Amped song contest. Pretty cool stuff but not as cool as Celia herself as we found found out.

LL – Your really causing a stir in the hearts of fans and musicians alike! You have work hard and have come a long way in a very short time. with your first 5 song ep “Harmony” coming November 30th,what are your immediate musical career goals and
where do you see yourself in 3 years?

CG – I am so passionate about my music. I want to get my songs out there and I will work as hard as I have just to make that happen. My immediate career goals are simple. I want to sell my music, continue gigging, continue to build a fanbase, and also I am trying to get more subscribers on youtube. In three years I’d like to have a team behind me, a booker, manager, lawyer, and I’d like to be on tour and starting to make a mark in many different places. I hope in three years my music career will be taking off and I will be continuing to be successful.

LL – I know you write your own music. A lot of stiff competition out there! Whats sets you apart? What do you have that draws the listener in?

CG – I think that I have a way with displaying my true emotion through music. I write all of my songs purely for me and things that happen to me and inspire me and such. I have made the decision to share my songs. I have been through many things, but my experiences aren’t rarities by any means, so I share my songs in hopes that people connect to them and maybe to help them feel less alone. I think that since I write genuine songs it helps people connect. Also, I think that my personality and my voice are very different and it sometimes turns heads because of such contrast. I have a very silly and bubbly personality but more of a sexy and sultry voice. I think it stands out.

LL – You seem to be playing everywhere! I’ve seen you perform and your absolutely flawless! Tell me, which has been your favorite or most memorable show and why?

CG – I have fallen in love with performing. I perform so very often. My most memorable show would have to be the Amped Contest Performance at Arts in the Heart downtown Augusta though. I often just play in restaurants, bars, and I am just background noise. My heart wants to be on a big stage where people are listening to me. All eyes on me. I remember when I was getting on that big stage I felt like I was exactly where I was meant to be. I looked out into the crowd and I saw what looked like thousands. All eyes where on me. I had such a rush and such an energy that I just couldn’t forget. I strive to find that feeling again.

L – While I don’t see how you could ever have a bad show, lets face it,we all have a bad night! Care to share a memory or two?

CG – Lets face it. This is my job and no one likes there job every single day. There are days that I am tired and don’t feel like playing a show or sometimes I am sick and my throat sort of hurts. Also, the crowd has a lot to do with my performance. I played at a bar once and the vibe just felt weird from the get go. People weren’t really listening and they weren’t really being respectful. Also, my voice can’t handle super smoky places very well. That night it was really smoky and I just couldn’t hit some notes. I didn’t enjoy the night and I guess since I wasn’t, neither was anyone else. I just felt out of my element that night.

LL – What is your favorite thing to see in an audience? What gives you that “sigh of relief”?

CG – I love when the audience is engaged in some way, shape, or form. Even if they glance at me and smile or if they stay for the whole show and come up to me after just to tell me how much they enjoyed the show or how they like my music. Pretty much any compliments make me feel like I did a good job. Also, if my friends or fans I know show up it makes me feel good because they are showing support just by showing up. One show I played a song and everyone clapped, cheered, and hollered afterward. It was a pretty magical feeling knowing that everyone there was engaged. As I said earlier, the audience is pretty important to me. I need an audience to be able to perform and I need an engaged audience to feel like I am doing my job as a musician.

LL – So when your not playing music, what are you most likely to be found doing?

CG – I am a full time student at the University of South Carolina Aiken with a major in Psychology. I am currently a Senior and I am always studying, reading, and doing ho - Leslie Raezer

"University Hype Review"

A little late on this Indie Sunday set, but hopefully this Florence Welch esque singer makes up for the delay. Celia sent her soundcloud link last week, and I absolutely loved her unique voice. I hope y’all enjoy her tracks and look forward to seeing more of her. - The Dean

"Review: Celia Gary – Harmony"

Unless you’ve been holed up in the Georgia mountains somewhere then you’re obviously aware that in the past couple of years the amount of female musical artists in the CSRA has increased. Actually, increased is putting it mildly. People the ladies have been gearing up for a musical chick revolution. Yeah they’re taking over. And Augusta couldn’t be happier about it.

Dropping seemingly out of nowhere just a few months back CELIA GARY has since made a splash bigger than her tiny feet could possibly do alone. Yeah she may be tiny but my what a powerhouse. The girl has more enthusiasm and energy than some whole bands.

Just when she proves it, she comes back with even more proof. This time in the form of beautifully organic CD release “Harmony.”

Offering the smooth acoustic simplicity that fans have grown to love in her performances yet with just enough dabbling to up the ante, “Harmony” is a 5-song platter of sensual grooves that highlight Gary’s lovely songwriting and haunting sultry voice. At a mere 21 years of age the singer/songwriter’s songs reflect content and maturity usually only afforded older, more seasoned artists. There is not a clunker in the bunch and while usually such a tasty ep can come off like one spoonful of your favorite food – just enough to piss you off – “Harmony” leaves the listener wanting more…but content.

While every song on “Harmony” is a keeper the top highlights can be found in “Then I Try”, additional Americana styling and swing added for a new excellent feel, and “Forever Tonight”, the beautiful love song closer. Fan favorite “Leave Me Hanging” can also be found along side opener “This Time Again” and anti-jerk tune “Player.”

Bottom line – get this CD. If anything to have the first sounds of an artist who is going places. No one works harder than Celia Gary. With a little luck…one day she could be the next artist to put Augusta, Georgia on the map.

"Verge – Lokal Loudness: 11/07/12"

Speaking of taking over the Augusta music scene – in just a short amount of time singer-songwriter CELIA GARY has build up a solid fan base and a mad respect amongst her peers. While Celia still has a lot to learn (and she’ll be the first to tell you that!) the young lady doesn’t let her “greeness” hold her back and has one of the strongest work ethics I’ve seen around Augusta in a while. The girl is always writing, performing, and promoting and now just a few short months after she decided to give the “music thing” a shot, she has already scheduled a CD release party for her upcoming EP “Harmony.” Actually she will be having TWO release shows, both on November 30th both at M.A.D. Studios – the early show at 6pm and late show at 10pm. In an effort to make sure she gets tickets in peoples hands she has even been camping out at different locations for people to buy them and admission not only includes what will surely be a great performance, but also a copy of her 5-song cd! Yeah…that girl sure knows how to work it! - John Stoney Cannon

Speaking of scary – isn’t it crazy scary how good area singer-songwriter CELIA GARY is? Celia takes simple melodies and throws in expressive lyrics and a unique “dark yet sensual” voice and creates catchy, haunted tunes. It is no surprise that she placed second in the Augusta Chronicle Amped Contest. Maybe the only surprise to some is that she didn’t actually come in first. Dang she’s good! It would also be scary if you didn’t check her out at CELIASMUSIC.COM. - John Stoney Cannon

"USCA student Celia Gary shares musical talent"

She has only been performing since the beginning of the year, but her voice resonates well beyond her years. You may have seen her around Aiken, but if not don't worry, Celia Gary will be around for a while."It's been really exciting, a great experience," Gary said. "I've learned a lot, not only with my music, but with the people."I've really enhanced my performance. I've been writing more and have been able to share my music with the community, which has been really great."The USC Aiken psychology major is entering her senior year, but her love for music may trump a career in the field she studies."I love music and I hope it takes me somewhere, but if not maybe I'll go down the path of psychology," Gary said.As much as she now enjoys playing live, it's as much for her as it is for the fans, ones that she hopes connect with her music."I really just wanted to share my music," Gary said. "I've always just done music for me, but I just got this feeling that I'd love to share it with the world and see if anyone else can connect. If somebody's going through something, maybe listening to my music will help them get through it."With a folk style and a bluesy voice, Celia is easily remembered. Many have already caught her around town either performing by herself or with fellow singer/songwriter Eli Montgomery. It has been the response that has kept her going strong in her young career."The feedback has been really great," Gary said. "The people are really, I think, connecting with my music and I think that is a plus, definitely, that people are enjoying it."Anytime somebody says something positive to me it gives me that confidence that, yes, I can do this again."Gary's music can be found on a slew of social network and music sites, most prominently on her Facebook page. She will also be one of many local talents taking the stage in next weekend's amateur talent contest. The winner will be determined by online fan voting.Chris Walsh is the arts and entertainment reporter for the Aiken Standard.
