Champagne Colored Cars

When I listen to Champagne Colored Cars, I’m reminded of one of 2016’s biggest surprises for me, Tiny Moving Parts’ Celebrate. Both Celebrate and Champagne Colored Cars’ debut self-titled EP are mathy emo albums with more than just a little post-hardcore influence – but both manage to be so much damn fun. Now, to be sure, Champagne Colored Cars is significantly less technical than anything Tiny Moving Parts has ever released, and to me, that’s a bit of a bonus; it gets tiring sometimes when every band wants to be “American Football But Heavy.”


The band throws some trumpet into “I Eat Stickers All the Time Dude,” and it’s a cool mix to hear horns over screams. The next track, lead single “Super Silver,” finds the band channeling Sorority Noise’s blend of pop-punk, emo, and post-hardcore, with a jittery but catchy hook. It’s a nice burst of energy before the post-rock inflected closer.

“Radiant” ends the album with a nice gradual build to the heaviest moment of the record, which finds vocalist Tyler Perkins practically audibly shredding his throat. It ends up as the most powerful song on the EP, which is fair praise for a debut as impressive as Champagne Colored Cars. Here’s hoping the followup is just as impressive.

Formed by Atlanta emo vets Tyler Perkins (Bear Girl, Extrovert), Tyler Hendley (Iselia), and Noah Linn (Dog Years, Novelty Foxtrot, Pity Clap), Champagne Colored Cars isn’t just a fresh new start a few guys who have been around the scene for a minute, it’s an electric new take on a rejuvenated genre. The trio’s self-titled debut clocks in at a powerful and exciting 13 minutes, stretching twinkling guitar riffs over fast punk beats and mathy rhythms.

Lead single “Super Silver” is a high-speed and complex punch in the gut that offers an appetizing look at what the remainder of the EP is going to sound like. Perkins’ earnest yet assertive vocals compliment the group’s near frantic instrumentals exceptionally well, bringing a stabilizing sense of melody to the song’s bouncy and dynamic attack.

With each listen of their new EP, I continue to fall in love with what this band is doing. This is restlessly energetic, fast and mean emo. It has a forceful, almost aggressive styling that keeps it from slipping into yet another modern rip-off of seminal ’90s acts like American Football.

“I’m very excited about this release,” Perkins says when I ask him about the new project. “The amount of hard work and dedication everyone has shown so far is very refreshing and makes everything we do very rewarding and just fun in general. We’re writing a follow-up already and plan on touring the East Coast in early 2018.”

Listening to a band such as Champagne Colored Cars, I can’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of youthful nostalgia. This EP reminds me of the times when I would drive an hour or two with my best friends to a dingy club where the audience was comprised only of the rest of the performers on the playbill. Yeah, this album is really pop-punk, but that’s not all it has to offer. The lo-fi production and juvenile vocals on this EP fees like a Macseal project, but the intricate guitar passages and frail horns remind me of TTNG.

CCC’s blend of emo, pop punk, and math rock isn’t exactly new, and I can’t say their doing anything revolutionary with these sounds. But, they still sound fairly unique due to the variety in their vocal melodies. The vocals on tracks like “Blue Oak” and “I Eat Stickers All the Time, Dude” remind me of the most recent CityCop album, while those on “Radiant” sound like a duet between Andy Hull and Kevin Devine that one would only find on a Bad Books song. Overall, this is a nice little EP that will make you feel sixteen again.
