The Austin Songwriters Group (ASG) was founded in 1987 by Christine Albert, Tommy Pierce, and Craig Calvert as a non-profit organization dedicated to educating and developing aspiring songwriters. With a membership of approximately 300, the group also provides numerous opportunities for working with publishers, A&R reps and other music industry professionals.

For a number of years, ASG has annually had two song contests, with winners historically earning prominent performance opportunities, music gear, mentoring sessions, recording sessions at famed studios, and many other prizes. This yearÂ’s prizes include:

  • Grand Prize - Trip to Willie Nelson's recording studio; four hours recording time with Willie's sound engineer, Matt Hubbard; four hours studio time with Marvin Dykhuis; one songwriter session with Stephen Doster; a March 2009 ASG Showcase Slot at Threadgill's South on Riverside Drive; winning song will be aired on the ASG website.

  • First Place in Each Category - Four hours studio time with Marvin Dykhuis; winning song will be posted on the ASG website.

  • Second Place in Each Category - Free one year membership to Austin Songwriters Group (value $50).

  • Third Place in Each Category - One entry into the ASG 2008 Fall Song Contest in one category.

All winners will receive an ASG certificate award designating their status in the contest. Accepted categories include country, rock, singer/songwriter, pop, jazz, blues, inspirational/gospel, bare bones, instrumental, lyrics, and general (including comedy, novelty, showtunes, etc.). Artists may submit an unlimited number of songs to the contest. If you're an ASG member, email to get your promotional code for special member pricing.

Judges will include the ASG board, advisory board, and several very prominent songwriters who have had #1 hits on the charts.
