Enter D.C.'s Hottest Five competition and you could win a recording package, worldwide digital distribution deal, and your own headlining concert at the world famous Hard Rock Cafe!

They’re looking for acts from all genres; rock, hip-hop, pop, country, jazz, German polka...as long as you're good at what you do, you can enter! All they ask is that you have at least one original song to submit. (Sorry, cover bands!) Submission is open now and ends at 11:59 on July 26!

After the submission period ends, they’ll select the 25 best acts and post them on DC.METROMIX.COM, along with a photo, bio and a link to where our Metromix readers can hear some of their tunes, then vote on which group they think is the best. The top five bands will each get a spot on WUSA*9 CBS's morning show, and then go on to perform at the Hard Rock Cafe on August 27 in a final showdown concert.

After a week of on air performances, all five musical acts will perform live at the Hard Rock Cafe on August 27th for a final showdown open to the public. Once all the groups have played, audience members can text their vote for the performer(s) they think are D.C.'s hottest musical sensation! More details will be announced closer to the concert date.

What are the prizes?

Five qualifying bands will get:

  • A spot in the Battle of the Bands concert at the Hard Rock Cafe on August 27.

  • An in studio performance at WUSA*9 CBS to be broadcast during the morning show August 17-21.

  • A chance to write the theme song for Channel 9's recurring news segment "Hero Central"

One grand prize winner will receive:

  • Their own headlining show at the Hard Rock Cafe

  • A worldwide digital release party for their song from Braat Musik

  • Professional press photos and their own electronic press kit

  • Prizes from the D.C. Lottery worth at least $100

  • A $200 Hard Rock Cafe gift certificate good at any HRC in the U.S.

Terms And Conditions



This Contest has Three Stages: Stage One the acquiring of the bands to participate in this Contest starts at 10:00 AM EST on Monday, July 13th 2009 and ends at 11:59 PM EST on Sunday, July 26th 2009 at which point the bands chosen to be in the competition will be notified;
Stage Two the voting period of the contest starts at 12:00 PM EST on Wednesday, July 29th 2009 and continues until 12:00 PM EST Wednesday, August 12th 2009 at which point the top 5 vote-getting bands will be notified; Stage Three the performance section will begin with W*USA9 studio appearances starting on Monday, August 17th 2009 and conclude with the final concert at the Hard Rock Caf on Thursday, August 27th 2009 (Contest Period).
The sponsors of this sweepstakes are Metromix.com [4100 Wisconsin Ave, NW Washington DC 20016] , The DC Lottery [2101 Martin Luther King Jr Ave, SE Washington, DC 20020] Braat Musik [10955 Crossview Drive Great Falls, VA 22066] and The Hard Rock Caf [999 E St, NW Washington DC 20004] (Sponsors). The Sweepstakes shall be subject to these Official Contest Rules, and by entering, all entrants agree to abide and be bound by the terms and conditions herein and the decisions of the Sponsors. Certain restrictions may apply.

1) How to enter: During the Contest Period Stage One, go to dc.metromix.com to complete the entry form, including your band or group name, a representative from the groups name, age, mailing address, email address, web address, phone number and description (no more than 1,000 characters), photo and link to hear original music from your band or group. You must provide all information requested on the entry form, your contact information must be accurate, and you must have a valid e-mail account and/or website address in order for your entry to be eligible. In the event of a dispute regarding the identity of an entrant, the holder of the e-mail account will be deemed the person who submitted the entry. Incomplete entries will be disqualified and Sponsors are not responsible for online entries that are lost, late, deleted, garbled, misdelivered, or misdirected as a result of technical, internet or other online difficulties. You may also enter by the alternate methods of entry, by mailing in OR personally dropping off all the above mentioned information to the WUSA9 Studio [mail-in to Metromix.com Attn: DCs Hottest 5 4100 Wisconsin Ave, NW Washington DC 20008 OR Drop off during normal business hours of 9am 5pm EST Monday Friday at the same above mentioned address]. All entries for Stage One must be received by 11:59 PM EST Sunday, July 26th 2009. All received entries become the property of Sponsors and will not be returned.

2) Eligibility: This Contest is open to legal United States residents who are 18 years of age or older as of the first day of the Contest Period. All members of the band or group must be 18 years of age or older as of the first day of the Contest Period. Employees (and their immediate household or family members) of the Sponsors and their respective, advertising companies, parent companies, affiliates, subsidiaries, promotion and delivery contractors and/or public relations companies, are not eligible to participate. All bands or groups must have at least one band member who resides anywhere within the states of Virginia, Maryland or Washington, DC and each band/group must have at least ONE ORIGINAL song that they own 100% of the rights to that they can perform on-air. Bands making it into the top 5 will be required to sign an additional release form stating that they do in-fact own 100% of the rights to the song they will be performing on the W*USA9 morning show. Should your band/group advance to the final 5 performance in the morning news and at The Hard Rock Caf show on August 27th, 2009 bands must be able to comply and perform with our generic set-up of one standard drum set, one guitar/bass amp, a PA to be supplied with additional select backline but bands may be required to provide some or all of their own equipment. The maximum size of the band or group may not exceed what can fit into a 16x12 square foot area OR no more than 6 band/group members will be allowed to perform at either the morning show or Hard Rock Caf performance. A potential winner may be requested to provide the Sponsors with proof that all eligibility requirements are met. Void where prohibited.

3) Contest and Notification: On Monday, July 27th 2009 after Stage One has concluded, up to 25 bands may be selected by a panel of judges including representatives from the Sponsors to move on to Stage Two - the online voting portion of the contest. The bands selected to move on to Stage Two will be notified no later than, Wednesday, July 29, 2009. 5 winning acts will be selected based on a combination of online fan votes and our panel of judges to move on to the final Top 5 Band Concert. Stage Three -These Top 5 Bands will be notified no later than Wednesday, August 12, 2009. On Thursday, August 27th 2009 during the concert at The Hard Rock Caf, the ultimate winner will be decided based on audience text message votes. Exact odds of winning depend on the number of eligible votes received. Representatives from the Sponsors will conduct the judging; the Contest judges will make all final decisions in any and all issues related with this contest. The 25 bands selected to move on to Stage Two will be notified by telephone or by email or using the information provided in the entry form by end of business on Wednesday, July 29, 2009. The Top 5 vote-getting bands selected to move on to Stage Three will be notified by telephone or by email by end of business on Wednesday, August 12, 2009. The final winning act will be notified on-site upon conclusion of The Hard Rock Caf concert to take place on Thursday, August 27th 2009. At any stage in the contest a band/group may be disqualified and an alternative act will be chosen if: (1) the originally decided upon act cannot be contacted/does not respond to our initial contact by 12:00pm EST on Friday, July 31, 2009 (Stage One) and/or by 12:00pm EST on Thursday, August 13th 2009 (Stage Two); (2) a originally selected act does not fulfill the eligibility requirements including but not limited to possessing an ORIGINAL song of their own; (3) a originally selected act does not adhere to the Official Contest Rules; and/or (4) if the notification is returned as undeliverable, refused, or declined.
4) The Prizes: There are two prize levels throughout this competition. Five bands will win the Stage Two prizes and one band will win the Stage Three prize pack:
Stage Two prizes: The top 5 bands will each receive: exposure on the W*USA9 Morning show through a performance of their own, original music on the show as well as the chance to play the intro/outro theme song for the show that day of their performance, the opportunity to create a theme song for our segment called Hero Central (based on the discretion of W*USA9 executives, one bands song MAY be selected for use IF they are selected, W*USA9 will own all rights to Hero Central theme music and a spot in the Hard Rock Caf concert.
Stage Three: An ultimate Prize Pack will then be awarded to Grand Prize Winning, Hottest musical act as decided upon at the Hard Rock Caf concert by fan text message voting. The prize pack will include: A DC Lottery prize-pack contribution valued at no less than $100; An original, digital song release by Braat Musik (**exact deal and arrangements to be made directly between Braat Musik and the winners); the ability to play a concert at the Hard Rock Caf, Washington DC Mezzanine Bar Live to be held on an available Thursday remaining during the 2009 calendar year as well as a gift certificate good for use at any Hard Rock Caf location in the United States for two-hundred dollars ($200) The value of this grand prize, prize pack is approximately three-hundred dollars ($300 excluding the undeterminable value of the winner and Braat Musiks agreement regarding a digital release.

Winners will be responsible for any and all additional expenses including but not limited to costs incurred with getting and maintaining their music website, transporting their band and equipment to and from the W*USA9 Studio, the concert at Hard Rock Caf and any other location, admission to the event for their fans, food and beverage costs and any other costs incurred with making it into the Hottest 5 concert.

The winner may not substitute prizes and prizes are not transferable. Only Sponsors, at their sole discretion, may substitute a prize of equal value due to lack of availability for any given reason. All winners are solely responsible for applicable federal, state and local taxes in connection with the prize in the year in which the prize is awarded. All expenses not specifically mentioned are the responsibility of the winners. Sponsors are not responsible if the show is canceled, postponed, or delayed.

5) Other Conditions: All winning bands picked to be in the Top 5 will be required to sign and return both an Affidavit of Eligibility which must be submitted to W*USA9 and Metromix.com within one business day after receiving notification of win and a Release form stating you do in-fact have 100% ownership rights to the song you will perform on the show, that you will not use vulgar or inappropriate language or actions while performing and that you will show-up and participate in each of the required performances (the morning show appearance, the Hard Rock Caf concert for the top 5 bands and the digital release party should you be the grand-prize winning band). Note: If no band is selected as a winner, then W*USA9 will find Hero Central music elsewhere. W*USA9 is under no obligation to use any music in or for their Hero Central show. The release and affidavit must be submitted upon entry into Stage Three of the contest. Failure to return such documents will result in that winner/runner-up being disqualified and another winner/runner-up will be chosen the Sponsor from all remaining eligible entries.

By entering, contestants agree to release, waive and hold harmless Sponsors and each of their respective affiliates, subsidiaries, parent corporations and advertising and promotional agencies, and all of their officers, directors, shareholders, employees and agents from any and all injuries, claims, damages, losses, costs, or expenses of any kind (including without limitation attorneys fees) resulting from the contestants participation in this contest, their acceptance, use, or misuse of any prize or element thereof, and any travel or event-related activity in connection with the Contest. Sponsors are not responsible for printing or typographical errors in any Contest-related materials.

By entering this Contest, contestants agree to allow use of their names, voices, original song material, photograph, likeness and any information provided on entry form, in any medium of communication, including print, Internet, radio and/or television and for any purpose, including advertising, promotional or other purposes, by Sponsors and their respective affiliates, without additional compensation.

Winners acknowledge that Sponsors have neither made nor are in any manner responsible or liable for any warranty, representation, or guarantee, express or implied, in fact or in law, relating to any of the prize items, including but not limited to, the quality, merchantability, habitability, mechanical condition, or fitness of the prize items.

6) Internet/Fraud/Tampering: If for any reason this Contest is not capable of running as planned, or if this Contest or any web site associated therewith (or any portion thereof) becomes corrupted or does not allow the proper playing of the Contest and processing of entries in accordance with these rules, or if infection by computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, actions by entrants, fraud, technical failures, or any other causes, in the Sponsors sole opinion, corrupts or affects the administration, security, fairness, integrity, or proper conduct of this Contest the Sponsor reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to disqualify any individual implicated in such action and/or to cancel, terminate, modify, or suspend this Contest or any portion thereof. In the event this Contest is cancelled, the Sponsor will conduct a random drawing to award prize at any Stage from among all eligible, non-suspect entries received prior to the time of the action or event warranting such cancellation. If such cancellation, termination, modification, or suspension occurs, notification will be posted at the Entry Site. ANY ATTEMPT BY AN ENTRANT OR ANY OTHER INDIVIDUAL TO DELIBERATELY DAMAGE ANY WEB SITE (INCLUDING THE ENTRY SITE) OR UNDERMINE THE LEGITIMATE OPERATION OF THE CONTEST IS A VIOLATION OF CRIMINAL AND/OR CIVIL LAWS AND SHOULD SUCH AN ATTEMPT BE MADE, THE SPONSORS RESERVE THE RIGHT TO SEEK DAMAGES AND OTHER REMEDIES FROM ANY SUCH PERSON TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW. Any entry information collected from the Contest shall be used only in a manner consistent with the consent given by entrants at the time of the entry, with these Official Contest Rules and with the dc.metromix.com online Privacy Policy, which can be found at dc.metromix.com
