Skip Ewing’s Horse & Writer Invitational is a seven-day songwriting program presenting aspiring writers with a unique opportunity to learn one-on-one from masters of the craft. This year’s Invitational is being held on August 24 – 30, 2008 at the Lazy L&B Ranch in Dubois, Wyoming. The mentors include Skip Ewing, Chris Wallin, Clay Mills, and Deanna Bryant who are all very seasoned and successful songwriters with 13 Number-1 singles, almost 300 album cuts, multiple Grammy nominations and many other impressive accolades.

The Horse & Writer Invitational has opened submissions for songwriters of all genres to apply for the opportunity to receive a scholarship for the entire amount of the tuition ($2500), not including transportation to and from the program. All songs submitted will be heard by a panel of top industry professionals, publishers, the Horse & Writer staff, and hit songwriters. Artists do not need to be experienced horseback riders to attend.

The Horse & Writer Invitational is not necessarily looking for a “bona-fide” hit (but if they hear one, they will help it get heard). They are looking for writers who are talented and committed, and whose work shows genuine promise and is taking steps in the right direction.

Selected artists will receive concentrated songwriting mentorship in the areas of creativity, relationships, self-exploration and observation, the business of writing, craftsmanship, and much more through their scholarship to the Invitational. Instruction includes: evaluations, writing exercises, observation, commentary, and staff presentations. At the Invitational, single-song publishing contracts will be awarded, and one writer will join the Horse & Writer staff performing at a sold-out benefit show on August 30th, 2008!

Please note: Submitters must be 18 years old to apply. Songs must be original and artists must own the copyrights to their music. Songs with more than 3 co-writers are not eligible. If multiple co-writers would like to be considered for the same song, each writer must apply separately. All co-writers must consent to the submission of the song. Please include lyrics with your submission.

Skip Ewings Horse & Writer Invitational
Official Rules and Regulations
Please read carefully.
1. To be considered for acceptance into Skip Ewings Horse & Writer Invitational (Invitational), an applicant
must submit a lyric sheet (typed or printed legibly) for the song. Song must be the applicants original work. If song
submitted has been co-written, applicant must have each co-writers permission to submit the song with his/
her application. Note: A submitted song cannot be written by more than three (3) writers. Any song written
by more than three (3) writers will not be considered. Co-writers are not automatically considered along with
the applicant. Any co-writer who wants to be considered in connection with the same song must submit his
or her own separate application and application fee with such song. By way of example, if an applicant
(applicant B) is a co-writer on a song submitted by another applicant (applicant A), and if applicant B wishes
to be considered for acceptance to the Invitational based on the merit of the same song submitted by
applicant A, then applicant B must submit a separate and distinct application. An applicant may submit as
many applications as he or she wishes, provided that each application includes a separate and distinct song
from any other application submitted by the same such applicant. Each separate application submitted must
include a fully completed application form, a CD or analog cassette tape containing the one (1) song with
which the applicant is applying with that particular application form, lyric sheet (typed or printed legibly) and
$40 application fee. Applications may be rejected without the proper submission requirements. Please refer
to Horse & Writer Invitational Application Form for complete details on how to submit your application.

announcement of accepted applicants. Please do not contact Invitational staff to check on status of your
application. All applicants to the Invitational, whether or not selected, may register to attend Skip Ewings
Horse & Writer Classic (Classic), subject to space availability. Although there is no application process
for the Classic, anyone wishing to attend must register, with acceptance extended on a first come, first
served basis. If an applicant is selected for acceptance to the Invitational, and he or she has a confirmed
registration for attendance at the Classic, that applicant may attend both programs. In the event such
applicant wishes to attend only the Invitational, registration fees, deposits and/or payment in full for the
Classic will not be refunded. However, Classic will endeavor to fill such applicants vacated spot for the

determined by the Invitational, in its sole discretion, nor can songs defame or invade publicity rights or
privacy of any person(s), living or deceased, or otherwise infringe upon any persons personal or property
rights or any other third party rights. Submitted songs may not have been previously recorded and released
through major national distribution in any country, nor may they have been the recipient of recognition by
any writing competition in any country prior to February 2008.

from such co-writer(s) to grant the rights set forth herein and, if requested by Invitational, can produce such
permission in a form acceptable to Invitational, and shall execute, and cause applicable third parties to
execute, further documentation required by Invitational to effectuate the intent of the foregoing.
9. Attendees will be expected to comply with the rules and regulations of the Invitational and Invitational
reserves the right, exercised in Invitationals sole discretion, to disqualify, eject or remove noncompliant
attendee(s) from attendance at the Invitational, including, without limitation, in the event Invitational, in its
sole discretion, determines that such attendee has provided false or misleading information in connection
with their application, or has engaged in behavior which tends to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass any other
attendee, Invitational or the Released Parties, in which case the removed attendees paid tuition and/or
