Summary

“King Me” is a documentary that explores the sometimes surreal world of competitive checkers as seen through the eyes of South African township resident Lubabalo Kondlo. Directed by Geoff Yaw and produced by Think Media Studios, the film is currently in post production. It is looking for songs to add to the movie's soundtrack. Artists can submit up to 3 songs for consideration.

The artists / songwriters may receive negotiable sync fees plus applicable performance royalties if placed, based on the usage in the film. Writers must be registered with a performance rights organization (ex. ASCAP, BMI, SESAC) to receive performance royalties. This listing is for a "Direct Placement." Selected artists will work directly with decision makers for possible inclusion in the film.

The film needs the following music:

  • SPOT A: Temp song to replace: "Ragged Wood" by Fleet Foxes - acoustic arrangement with the "gallop" drum feel (African vocal wail/chant approach would be preferable)

  • SPOT B: Temp song to replace: "The Click Song" by Miriam Makeba – there is a specific South African dialect with the "click" language - songs should try to reflect this or be about this if possible; at least a 'traditional' South African ethnically accurate song (not a modern song)

  • SPOT C: Temp song to replace: "Who Do You Love" by George Thorogood – just a good ol' mid American bluesy rock n roll song

  • SPOT D: Temp song to replace: "Prizefighter" by The Eels

  • SPOT E: Temp songs to replace: TIMBER TIMBRE songs "Magic Arrow", "There Is A Cure", "Patron Saint Hunter", "Demon Host"

  • SPOT F: South African ethnic or cultural music

  • SPOT G: Barbados ethnic or cultural music

Plot summary:

King Me explores the sometimes surreal world of competitive checkers as seen through the eyes of South African township resident Lubabalo Kondlo. In 2007, with the help of some sympathetic Americans and under the radar of oppressive forces in his homeland, Kondlo traveled to the U.S. to compete in the U.S. National Championship of Checkers in Las Vegas, Nevada. A relative unknown in the legitimate checkers world, Kondlo crushed the competition and earned the right to challenge 20+ year reigning World Champ, Ron 'Suki' King. King Me tells the story of a game that struggles for respect, the men and women who love it, how cultures and societal norms are sometimes challenged, and how a seemingly meaningless game can change everything for one man who lives life on the fringes.
