Please note:The Lowell Folk Festival is a member of the NCTA Festival Family. Artists applying to this festival need not apply to the Richmond Folk Festival which is also produced by the NCTA.
Over 25 years old, the annual Lowell Folk Festival is one of the largest events of its kind in the nation. A celebration of traditional music, dance, storytelling food, and crafts, presenting the arts of many nations, races and languages at the same event on an equal footing, the FREE TO THE PUBLIC event attracts crowds in excess of 160,000. The festival books up to 25 acts, which are scheduled throughout the weekend on 6 outdoor stages.

NCTA festivals strive to present the very finest traditional artists from across the nation. In making its selections, the NCTA is guided by the following definition of FOLK & TRADITIONAL ARTS written by the National Endowment for the Arts:
The folk and traditional arts are rooted in and reflective of the cultural life of a community. Community members may share a common ethnic heritage, language, religion, occupation, or geographic region. These vital and constantly reinvigorated artistic traditions are shaped by values and standards of excellence that are passed from generation to generation, most often within family and community, through demonstration, conversation, and practice. Genres of artistic activity include, but are not limited to, music, dance, crafts, and oral expression.
In addition to the genres listed above, the Lowell Folk Festival is also accepting submissions from artists in these genres: Appalachian, African Diaspora, and Eastern European.
The Lowell Folk Festival is produced by the Lowell Festival Foundation & the Lowell National Historical Park in partnership with the National Council for the Traditional Arts (NCTA).
Past performers include: Angkor Dance Troupe, Bill Kirchen & Too Much Fun, The Birmingham Sunlights, Dervish, Dynasty Carnival Parade, Eden Brent, Marshall Ford Swing Band, Lil Ed & the Blues Imperials, Aurelio Martinez, Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper , Rhythm of Rajasthan, Natalie Pires, Oliver Mtukudzi & Black Spirits, West African Highlife Band and many more.
Perhaps the only festival around where you can experience Ethiopian funk music (Debo Band) on the same stage as modern bluegrass (Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper) and polka (Stanky & the Coal Miners). -Boston.com

FOLK & TRADITIONAL ARTS - a definition
The folk and traditional arts are rooted in and reflective of the cultural life of a community. The music of all submitting artists must adhere to this definition of Folk & Traditional Arts provided by the National Endowment for the Arts. Only artist's who's music fits under the following genres will be considered: Bluegrass, Blues, Celtic, Cajun, Country, Cowboy, Folk, Gospel, Hip Hop, Jazz, Latin, Novely/Variety, Reggae, Soul, Storytelling, Urban/R&B, Western Swing, World, Zydeco. Any submissions outside of these genres will be immediately marked as unqualified.
