The 2009 music series included Ani DiFranco, the Derek Trucks Band, Joan Baez, Jakob Dylan and the Wallflowers, Los Lobos, and more./n/nThe Lowell Summer Music Series annually presents 24 popular evening concerts during the summer months at the award winning Boarding House Park in Lowell, Massachusetts. They hire Grammy-caliber international touring artists. Although they prefer 'an evening with' format which consists of two sets by the headlining band with no opener, some bands only play one set, hence the very popular LSMS Exposure Opening Program. Performers from the 2009 season included Ani DiFranco, the Derek Trucks Band, Joan Baez, Jakob Dylan and the Wallflowers, Los Lobos, and more.

To be considered, bands should:

  • Primarily play original music

  • Gig consistently and have a recent CD release

  • Be high-level musicians seeking to make a living playing music

They are principally seeking bands that perform blues, rock, and other similar genres. Solo and duo acts playing genres such as singer-songwriter, folk, and Celtic may also be booked, but headliners in those styles are less likely to need an opener. Compensation is $100 cash, 100% of merchandise sales, and the chance to open for a legendary artist. Bands that make a good impression routinely sell between $500 to $1000 of merchandise after their set.

The Lowell Summer Music Series makes a strong effort to match their headliners with like openers to create the best show possible. In general, the audience size ranges between 1,000 to 2,000 people, and openers generally have a 35-40 minute set to make their impression. Immediately after the opening set there is a 20 minute intermission when the audience will have an opportunity to purchase your merchandise and meet the band. It should be noted that this is a very competitive process; some 200 bands will apply to open for the Lowell Summer Music Series annually. In general six to ten bands are chosen each year, and they get chosen between March and May, after the booking for the entire series is completed.

Bands will also be provided with snacks and drinks from series sponsors. Bands are responsible for all backline. The Series will provide both front of house and monitor sound systems as well as engineering if desired.
