Summary

The Songwriters' Association of Washington (SAW) presents the 30th Annual Mid-Atlantic Song Contest to help songwriters receive recognition for their work and to further excellence in songwriting through educational programs. Winners in individual categories compete for overall Grand, Second, and Third Prizes, in addition to Special Prizes, and Gold in 11 categories. The Judges are asked to score 5 Basic Song Elements, find out more in "Tips for Submitting" at MASC.org.

Submissions are accepted in the following categories: Adult Contemporary, Children's, Country/Bluegrass, Folk/Acoustic, Gospel/Inspirational/Christian, Instrumental, Open, Pop, R&B/Hip Hop/Urban, Rock/Alternative, Vocal Jazz/Blues.

Prizes:


  • Grand Prize- $1,000, 1 year Sonicbids membership, 8 hours studio time & 25 CDs at Bias Studio, 1 Registration to the 2014 Northeast Regional Folk Alliance (NERFA) conference, 1 Registration to the 2014 Southeast Regional Folk Alliance (SERFA) conference, 1 Registration to the 2014 Folk Alliance Region Midwest (FARM) conference, 1 FrameYourCD Album Frame, 3 year SAW membership, Grand Prize Trophy.

  • Second Place Overall- $500, 1 year Sonicbids membership, 1 Registration to the 2014 NERFA conference, 1 Registration to the 2014 SERFA conference, FrameYourCD Album Frame, 2 year SAW membership, Second Place Overall Trophy.

  • Third Place Overall- $250, 1 year Sonicbids membership, 1 year SAW membership, Third Place Overall Trophy. Sponsored by Mary Cliff's "Traditions" radio show.

  • Category Golds- $100

  • Category Golds & Silvers- Eligible to be selected by the Institute of Musical Traditions (IMT) concert series for a showcase.


Special Prizes


  • BMI Songwriter Award- $300 will be awarded by BMI to a BMI songwriter(s) who is a Gold category winner.

  • Directors Choice Award-The MASC Director chooses one song among the Gold or Silver Winners to receive 8 hours of studio time at Recording Arts with a CD/EP Project Consultation, and 1 year Sonicbids membership.

  • Young Artist Prize- $100, 8 hours studio time & 25 CDs at Cue Recording, and 1 year Sonicbids membership, to be awarded to the top song submitted by a songwriter aged 21 or younger at time of contest deadline (all co-writers must be under 21)

  • Inclusion on Compilation CD- The Grand Prize, Second, and Third Place Overall Prizes, BMI Songwriter Award, Director's Choice Award, Young Artist, and all songs placing Gold or Silver in their categories will be included on the official contest Winners' CD sponsored by Oasis Disc Manufacturing. All Winners appearing on the MASC CD will receive copies.

  • Early Bird Prize- Two artists who submit by July 15th will each win a $50 gift card and a free 2-year membership to SAW.



Certificates are awarded to each songwriter and co-writer meriting Silver, Finalist and Honorable Mention status. There is a special 30th MASC new member rate to join SAW ($25), giving writers a great deal if they submit multiple songs.

Please note: An updated list of prizes is at www.saw.org. Prizes must be redeemed within one calendar year of Awards Gala. The Conference Registrations do not include lodging or food. Venues, not MASC, select from among the Gold and Silver Winners for Showcases. If, due to circumstances beyond MASCs control, the independent sponsors do not deliver their prizes to winners, MASC will attempt to replace those prizes with like-quality prizes; however, MASC cannot be held accountable for prizes not delivered by sponsors. Federal, local, and state taxes on prizes are the sole responsibility of the winner. Unless noted, prizes are non-transferable and may not be redeemed for cash.

Terms And Conditions

1. Each entry must have lyrics EXCEPT for the Instrumental Category, which must include a 3 sentence description as to the artistic intent of the composition.

2. You must not have made more than $5,000 in publishing royalties in 2012, and cannot be employed as a staff writer for a publishing company, nor have been paid for such services by a publishing company.

3. Each entry must be wholly original (co-writers allowed) and shall not infringe on any copyrights or any other rights of any third party. Each entrant shall hold SAW harmless from and against claims inconsistent with these requirements.

4. No composition or lyric may be entered that has been: (1) placed under signed contract for commercial sale with any record label where the underlying contract prohibits the republication of the artist's recording in the MASC winners compilation CD; or (2) selected in previous years' MASC contests as Gold, Silver, Finalist. HOWEVER: You may re-submit songs having won Honorable Mention in past contests.

5. Acceptance of Terms: By via electronic submission (online), you agree to your acceptance of permissions and all contest rules and regulations listed here, and certify that any and all co-writers are listed, and have given their consent as well.

6. You may enter as many songs as you wish in each category. You may enter the same song in more than one category. It is strongly recommended that your song not exceed 4 minutes; however, all songs will be considered solely on their merits. All songs remain the property of the songwriter(s).

7. CHECK for technical glitches! We will not replace tracks once they are have been submitted. If you record a better version, you may submit it as a separate entry. Gold and Silver Winners will be allowed to submit their best versions for inclusion on the Winners' Compilation CD.

8. Grand, Second, and Third Place Overall receive the larger cash/product prizes ($1000, $500 & $250 plus memberships, services and products), and not the Gold category prize of $100. All prizes are given to the submitting songwriter. Division and distribution of prizes among co-writers is the responsibility of the entering songwriter.

A Note on Judging:
Judges may include: professional artists, venue operators, presenters, Performing Rights Organization (PRO) representatives, label representatives, DJs and satellite radio representatives, financial backers, and music supporters. Judges are instructed to disregard production/quality of recording. The Grand Prize Winner, Second Place Overall, and Third Place Overall Winners will be chosen from among the Gold Winners by a larger, separate panel of music industry professionals. Only the Contest Director and the Assistant Director know the songwriters identity until the judging process is complete.

PROMOTIONAL AGREEMENTS: Gold & Silver category Winners agree to furnish a recorded version of their winning song within two weeks after notification (non-MP3 version) for airplay during the Awards Gala. Winners also agree that SAW may post MP3 clips of their songs on the SAW website. WINNERS Compilation CD: Grand Prize, Second Place Overall, Third Place Overall, BMI Songwriter Award, Directors Choice Award, Young Artist Award, and Gold and Silver Winners are guaranteed inclusion on the Winners CD, provided that they meet the technical requirements, and as space permits. MASC has the right to edit songs for length, and to omit selected songs from the CD that do not meet MASCs technical standards. ALL top Winners consent to having their winning songs used in the manner listed above as part of their prize. Oasis Disc Manufacturing is a Sponsor of the Winners CD.
