The top three bands of this competition will advance to the finals in Folsom, CA in February or March of 2011 to compete for a performance spot at the 2011 Northern California Blues Festival on August 6, 2011. One One Sonicbids artist will be selected and have the normal $100 entrance fee waived.

The competition will be digitally multi-track recorded on a 32-channel recording system. Each band will receive a fully mixed/mastered copy of their performance on audio CD within 4 weeks after the competition. There will be ambient mics in the house too, so all participating artists/bands will receive a professionally produced live CD just for competing.

This competition is open to bands of any genre, but the performance will be at a Blues Festival, which is a family event where people like to enjoy good-time music and get up and dance. Bands do not need to play blues, but it should be appreciable and enjoyable by the folks who attend such an event.

The event will be held on January 8th at Velma's in San Francisco (2246 Jerrold Avenue, 415-824-7646). Check-in time will be 10AM. The Competition will begin at 11AM and end at 4PM. The registration fee of $100 per act will be required at check-in. Admission for non-performers will be $10 at the door.

Terms And Conditions

This competition is for bands with members 25 years old and younger.

Check-in time is 10AM.

Performances shall be no longer than 30 minutes in length.

The competition begins at 11AM and ends at 4PM.

No backline will be provided. Bands must bring their own gear.

Full PA, including mics, stands, monitors, etc. will be provided and the sound run will be run by a house engineer.

The scoring system below is a modified version of the International Blues Challenge scoring system.

SCORING CRITERIA

1. Vocals: The acts vocal skills.

2. Talent: The acts instrumental skills.

3. Originality: Original work is encouraged. Inclusion of a cover tune in the set is encouraged, but not required.

4. Stage Presence: The bands are not simply playing music, but putting on a show. This category rates how "sellable" a band may be.

To reflect the relative importance of each category in the success of a band, a band's score in each category is weighted. Raw scores for Talent and vocals are multiplied by three and Originality and Stage Presence are multiplied by two. The total in each category represents the Weighted Score for that category. Total possible weighted score is 100.

SCORING SYSTEM FOR JUDGES

1. All categories and weightings are as previously stated.

2. Each judge will indicate his or her Raw Score (a whole number between 1 and 10) in each category and turn that information over to the scorekeeper.
-1-3 Typical of a beginning band.
-4-5 Typical of a local weekend band.
-6-7 Typical of an advanced local band but not yet ready to headline a
major club.
-8-9 Typical of the quality of artists who headline major clubs.
-10 Typical of those who play the main stage at major festivals.

3. The scorekeeper will multiply the Raw Score in each category by the established multiplier to get each judge's Weighted Score in each category for each act.

4. The Weighted Scores from each category for an act are added together to determine the acts' Total Weighted Score for each judge.

5. After all acts have been judged and each act's Net Weighted Score for each judge calculated, the scorer shall calculate the sum of all Net Weighted Scores from all judges for the tied acts. The band with the highest sum of Net Weighted Scores wins, second highest comes in second, etc.
