The Roots are a Grammy Award winning American hip hop band formed in 1987 by Tariq "Black Thought" Trotter and Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They are famed for beginning with a jazzy, eclectic approach to hip hop which still includes powerful live instrumentals. The band's breakthrough album, Things Fall Apart, broke into the Top 10 best selling albums on Billboard's Top 100 chart, peaking at #4.

The Roots' newest album, How I Got Over, has been released to critical acclaim, with USA Today saying, "The band's daring genre-bending eclecticism and insightful socio-politicism make Over worth revisiting time and again." The band and all it's members pride themselves on being positive role models and active in social change, which is apparent when observing their extensive, ever-evolving body of work and devoted fanbase. On March 2, 2009, The Roots became the house band on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.
