Summary

Otto’s Shrunken head, located in New York City, is a new interpretation of the Tiki Bar. Mixing traditional Tiki decor and potent rum based concoctions with live bands and DJs, the result is NYC's premier Rock-n-Roll Tiki joint.

Although not exactly a live music venue in the traditional sense, Otto's has quickly become a fixture in the East Village music scene, hosting an incredibly diverse group of bands playing everything from lounge/exotica, rockabilly, punk, country, rock, garage, metal, surf and acoustic/singer/songwriter.

However, they are not just limited to live music. They host DJs throughout the week, a weekly stand-up show called Comedy Therapy, burlesque, variety shows, poetry readings, performance art, hip-hop showcases, open mic and movie nights, and have the occasional Karaoke night.

There is never a cover for shows at Otto’s. Compensation is not provided, but artists may collect tips and sell merchandise.

Otto's provides the following backline for bands:

• Guitar amps:
Peavey Classic 50 Tweed head 2 channel with distortion and reverb with 2x12 cabinet.
1966 Danelectro DM25 vintage tube amp combo with reverb and vibrato with 1x12 speaker.
Marshall JCM 900 50 watt w/ 2x12 cabinet.

• Bass rig is an Ampeg SVT3PRO or Yorkville 400 watt head with 1x15 cabinet.

• Pearl drum kit (1 rack tom, 1 floor tom & Bass drum) with hardware (hi-hat stand, 3 cymbal stands and throne).

• 8 channel Mackie PA mixer with 3 microphones and stands

History of Otto’s Shrunken Head:

A small group of native New Yorkers got together in early 2002 and decided that New York City did not have a decent Tiki Bar since the demise of Hawaii Kai in Times Square and the destruction of Trader Vic's at the Plaza Hotel by Ivana Trump. They approached their friend and fellow Tiki afficianado/Club Owner Deb Parker (owner of Beauty Bar & Barmacy) about buying Barmacy and transforming it into New York City's own little Tiki oasis. Thus with her blessing and the blessings of all the South Sea gods, Otto's Shrunken Head opened in the summer of 2002. The goal was to bring the laid back island vibe of the South Pacific to New York City. Manhattan is after all, an island.
