Please note: The Richmond Folk Festival is a member of the NCTA Festival Family. Artists applying to this festival need not apply to the Lowell Folk Festival, which is also produced by the NCTA.
The annual Richmond Folk Festival is a multi-cultural celebration of traditional music, dance, food, and crafts, presenting the arts of many nations, races and languages at the same event on an equal footing. It has become one of Virginias's largest and most loved events of the year and has been voted as the best musical festival in Richmond. Over its three days, the FREE TO THE PUBLIC event attracts crowds in excess of 200,000. The festival books up to 30 acts, which are scheduled throughout the weekend on 6 outdoor stages.

NCTA festivals strive to present the very finest traditional artists from across the nation. In making its selections, the NCTA is guided by the following definition of FOLK & TRADITIONAL ARTS written by the National Endowment for the Arts:
The folk and traditional arts are rooted in and reflective of the cultural life of a community. Community members may share a common ethnic heritage, language, religion, occupation, or geographic region. These vital and constantly reinvigorated artistic traditions are shaped by values and standards of excellence that are passed from generation to generation, most often within family and community, through demonstration, conversation, and practice. Genres of artistic activity include, but are not limited to, music, dance, crafts, and oral expression.
In addition to the genres listed above, the Richmond Folk Festival is also accepting submissions from artists in these genres: Appalachian, African Diaspora, and Eastern European.
The Richmond Folk Festival is produced by Venture Richmond in partnership with the National Council for the Traditional Arts (NCTA).

FOLK & TRADITIONAL ARTS - a definition
The folk and traditional arts are rooted in and reflective of the cultural life of a community. The music of all submitting artists must adhere to this definition of Folk & Traditional Arts provided by the National Endowment for the Arts. Only artist's who's music fits under the following genres will be considered: Bluegrass, Blues, Celtic, Cajun, Country, Cowboy, Folk, Gospel, Hip Hop, Jazz, Latin, Novely/Variety, Reggae, Soul, Storytelling, Urban/R&B, Western Swing, World, Zydeco. Any submissions outside of these genres will be immediately marked as unqualified.
