Nearly 5 years ago, two college students shared an idea to create a music event in a Deaf club. The plan took shape and 10 of 20 songs were interpreted into sign language that night. Together, a hearing and Deaf audience both enjoyed a night of music. Since then, 9 Sign Interpreted Concerts have been staged with 36 performances of over 150 songs interpreted by ITP students from The Seymour Joseph Institute of American Sign Language.

This takes place two times per year in Staten Island, NY. The next show will take place at The Cup on Van Duzer St. on Saturday, November 21st. This all-ages show begins at 7pm and typically runs until 11:30pm. The venue has changed since that first show, and the production team was reduced to one, but the goal remains the same: raise awareness of sign language and Deaf culture, while also bringing music to the Deaf and hard-of-hearing, and providing a wonderful night of entertainment. It was created and continues to be produced by local songwriter, Christian Davis.

The show features 4-6 songwriters playing 5 or 6 songs each. The songwriter is matched with a sign language interpreter from a local interpreter-training program who will be responsible for that performers material. This show requires the artists be available to work with their interpreter to prepare for the show ahead of time. Due to this requirement, the artist should be from the NYC/NJ/CT area (Philadelphia artists have played the event before as well), with the ability to travel. This is a great opportunity to showcase your material in front of a relaxed and respectful crowd of over 130 people. This show does not require artist's to draw a crowd, but artists are encouraged to invite friends and family. No prior knowledge of sign language is required.

Past performers include: Melody Gardot, Bess Rogers, Heavy Weather, Aster Pheonyx, Michael Aquino (of Sirs), and Joan Caddell. Accepted genres include: singer-songwriter, folk, indie, alternative, pop, rock, bluegrass, blues, and funk. No percussion is permitted for this show due to the use of sound-sensitive lighting. No compensation is provided to the artist, but they are able to sell merchandise after their performance.
