With deep roots as an Irish Revolutionary watering hole, the history of protest runs as deep today as it did when it opened three decades ago. It is looking to book bands and solo artists to play live at the venue that features the best acts from the Bay Area and beyond.

In order to maintain The Starry Plough's presence as a premier venue in the East Bay, it requires specific actions on the part of the artists, in order to ensure the shows are as great as possible.

Special considerations include:

  • A 6 week overexposure policy: The Starry Plough will not book a band if that band is booked in the East Bay 6 weeks before or after its Starry Plough date or in San Francisco within 3 weeks (some exceptions apply, but must be negotiated with the venue).

  • The Starry Plough requires a total head count per bill of no less than 75 people on Thursdays, and no less than 115 people on Friday and Saturday.

  • Promoters and bands are encouraged to approach the venue with a full bill, as long as it meets the requirements stated above.

  • Once a date has been booked, it needs to be thoroughly publicized. The venue will submit the basics of a show to its press contacts, but it is up to the band to really get out and pound pavement. The Starry Plough requires that the performing artists provide 3 copies of a flier for their show at least two weeks prior to the gig. It is also expected that shows will be posted on on jambase.com, artists' websites, myspace page, etc, as well as around Berkeley. Touring bands get some leniency on this, however promotions with the local press and radio stations is expected.
