Summary

The Wild Hare, located in Chicago, IL, is the city’s ground zero for roots, reggae and world beat music. Now a well-established cornerstone for reggae, dub, latin, soul, world and R&B music, the list of those who have performed on their stage reads like a Who’s Who of roots music.

Live music is presented six nights a week, featuring local, regional and touring acts. Since 1982, reggae bands from all over the world have gotten "irie" at this Wrigleyville joint. The set-up emphasizes the music: The club doubled in size in 1991 and sunk over $100,000 into its sound system. The bass is kept at a righteous level, and walls are painted black to showcase posters of reggae legends. The second floor is reserved for private parties.

There are often two performances per night on weekends, one at 9:30pm, the other at midnight. Cover can be as high as $20 for big-name performers such as Yellow Man. DJs spin between sets or when no band is booked. The bar serves Jamaica's favorite beer, Red Stripe, as well as Caribbean-style mixed drinks.

Additionally, as part of its goal, The Wild Hare consistently works to nurture African Caribbean music by producing, promoter and providing a work shop for Chicago based musicians.
