"Thousands Expected for 2012 Atlanta Peach Drop"

ATLANTA, GA (WABE) -
It's the largest New Year's Eve celebration in the southeast.
Saturday the annual Peach Drop takes place downtown at Underground Atlanta.
WABE's Rose Scott reports the festivities start early and there's something for everyone.

Rain or shine or even a light mist won't keep the 8-hundred pound peach from dropping for the 23rd time.
15-year-old Jacob Rodgers of the group Frets on Fire. But until the newly painted foam and fiberglass fruit begins its descent, Michelle Lawrence says there's plenty of fun stuff.

Lawrence is the director of marketing for Underground Atlanta.
She says, "there'll be tickets for Atlanta Hawks games, passes to center for puppetry arts also passes for some of the family activities we have going on for the PeachDrop like Peachtree Rides, face painting and ballon art."

A reminder says Lawrence, "we ask you not to bring pets, bags or backpacks, coolers, bikes, skateboards or lawn chairs"
There will be plenty of food vendors and rides says Lawrence.

15-year-old Jacob Rodgers is the drummer for the group Frets on Fire.
He says the band is all about playing good music and adds, "just expect a fun show, we're not trying to show off or anything, we're just up there for the music"

The members of Frets On Fire have been together since middle school.
They'll perform at noon in Kenny's Alley which is inside Underground Atlanta.
Jacob's bandmate 14-year old Connor Reinhardt say's it's pretty cool to play on New Year's Eve, "we play a mixture of like blues, rock and R&B, sort of like its own sound and we're all looking forward to it."

A band that's been together way before Connor & Jacob were born will headline the PeachDrop.
Kansas was originally formed in 1970 and after nearly 4 decades guitarist Richard Williams says hitting the stage never gets old.
"I love it, there isn't any new stuff, we really draw on our history that's what keeps us going and that's what's keeps us on the road, that's what our fans want to hear so it makes sense to give them that so that's what we do" says Williams.

He lives in Atlanta and says closing out the holiday season is special,
"new year's is a day I think for everyone it really is something special too and to be at home with family/friends that's really great, that just doesn't happen often anyway but on New Year's just for us, it's great." - WABE 90.1 FM (Atlanta) -- drive-time featured local news story on Dec 29, 2011

Bio

Frets on Fire, from Decatur, Georgia, is a young but experienced gigging band serious about their craft. The band's music can best be described as original roots rock with strong blues and R&B influences, in the tradition of Southern artists such as Sean Costello, Col. Bruce Hampton, the Wood Brothers, JJ Grey and Mofro, and Otis Redding and the Stax house band. These talented young musicians can light it up with the best of them, but Frets on Fire is first and foremost about the joy of making music as a collective: funky grooves, sweet and soulful intertwining guitar & vocal melodies and harmonies, and smart lyrics from the heart. This band has something to prove, but they damn sure have some fun along the way.

Frets formed in early 2009. With support from professionals such as Chicago Joe Jones and Col. Bruce Hampton in Atlanta's active blues music scene, and frequent performance opportunities, Frets on Fire rapidly grew into a tight unit focused on original music. The next year, the band was the youngest act to play on historic Beale Street in Memphis for the showcase event of the prestigious 2010 International Blues Challenge (which they reprised in Feb 2012). In the six years the band has been together, the band has matured into an experienced and widely-respected regular on the Atlanta-area live music scene and has performed regularly at festivals and venues all around the Atlanta area and the Southeast, with its music in rotation on local independent radio and international streaming broadcasts. The band's high-energy and soulful performances never fail to bring diverse audiences to their feet.
