Future Myth

Future Myth are a four-piece from San Jose who are releasing their debut EP, Flashbulb Memories, on January 29th. Their first two singles, “Little Voice” and “Cold Season”, show the group as a highly capable crafters of melodic jangle-rock, with evident comparisons to the guitar-driven tranquility of Real Estate. “Little Voice” is a bit on the heavier side, starting with heavy guitars slowly establishing the soundscape in shoegaze likeness. The gliding jangly guitar-pop kicks in around the 30-second point, though, showing the intro as a teaser for the actual chorus – which is a beautiful gauzy layer of sound that contrasts beautifully with the more sprightly verses. It’s a fantastic effort that shows Future Myth’s playful songwriting in strong form.

The equally impressive “Cold Season” has a jangly bounce that reminds of Mac Demarco, with a touch of classic ’50s rock ‘n’ roll in the amiable guitar accompaniments and background da-da-ing vocal additions. It’s another excellent effort, and in addition to “Little Voice” shows Future Myth as a group with full of potential whose upcoming EP and an future releases are absolutely on my radar. - Obscure Sound

Make a little room on your radar for San Jose, California’s Future Myth, an indie scene shoo-in born from the remains of past Bay Area acts.

With the foursome’s debut EP, Flashbulb Memories, due out next Friday, January 29, the band is sure to start making waves in the indie rock realm with a wholly engrossing sound that at times brings to mind the works of Real Estate, The Radio Dept., the sadly defunct Low Vs. Diamond and even Mac Demarco.

Boasting intricately layered instrumentation peppered with spaced-out effects and post-rock elements, the two singles streaming below offer excellent evidence of what to expect on the band’s inaugural effort—a six-track, drearily dreamy stunner that’s sure to impress.

Future Myth are a quartet who first surfaced in 2014 and promptly disappeared only to reappear late last year. With only a couple of songs to hear, the current selection may seem narrow, however Future Myth have been able to cover considerable ground with the two tracks, both of which will be on the EP.




Cold Season has a retro ’60s Brit-rock timbre to it.

Little Voice is of different legs and it sounds as though they have been studying logarithms as there is an angular, almost Maths-Rock disposition to the material, which blends delightfully with a shoegazey high pitched guitar from which the vocal crystallises as a shuffle-beat percussion keeps up the momentum. As with Cold Season, Future Myth, play around with pacing and the five and a bit minutes of Little Voice leave the listener feeling they have threaded through a highly entertaining short-story. - Emerging Indie Bands

Future Myth, the Bay Area alternative art-rock and psychedelic four-piece band (Joseph, Ben, Nick, and Kevin) dropped their first two singles, “Little Voice” and “Cold Season,” off their upcoming debut EP, Flashbulb Memories (Jan. 29). Psychedelic indie dream gazers ‘Future Myth’ hail from San Jose, California and collectively create a stunning blend of psych, shoegaze, dream/baroque pop & rock that is absolutely stuffed full to the brim of soaring melodic harmonies & shimmering, swirling soundscapes. This impressive four piece self release their debut album entitled ‘Flashbulb Memories’ on January 29th 2016 and it follows on from their debut single ‘Little Voice’, released via the bands bandcamp page. The band are made up of Joseph, Ben, Nick & Kevin.

Melody heavy ‘Little Voice’, the bands debut single, opens the door to this impressive sonic journey with a swirling wall of sound followed by repetitive but incredibly addictive guitar pattern that weaves in and out of a shimmering vocal line. The chorus soars within a cacophony of emotive sounds too & it makes this track the ‘Stand Out’ track for me on this whole release. Track two ‘Sleepless’ slows proceedings down with a wavy intro but don’t be fooled. Melodic vocals, trembling guitar parts and a shuffling percussion usher this track into its emotive break where we’re treated to reverb drenched vocals straddling a solid beat until its finale. Track 3, ‘Cold Season’, swerves into a more pop/rock territory. Not really my thing if I’m honest but I’m impressed with the songs structure, its slick melodic lines & brilliant vocal harmonies. ‘End Of The Year’ starts slow but builds into a wall of beautiful melody. Swirling guitars mingled with solid drums & bass cushion the vocal with relative ease. Up next ‘Far As Stars’ brings violins into the sonic ether. Acoustic guitars, sparse percussion & another uplifting melodic vocal drives this track to its finality and there is a hint of psychedelic fare interspersed within its driving sonic core. The EP’s closing track ‘Solstice’ begins with a droning synth coupled with a repetitive guitar line thats used primarily to carry the impressive vocal. It builds & shimmers as each instrument enters the musical soundscape. Again, ‘Solstice’ has subtle hints of dreamy/baroque inspired pop but its overall sound is most definitely of a more alt rock inspired nature!

From their debut EP Flashbulb Memories, Future Myth brings us “Little Voice” with an unhurried inflection that tells us in one song what to expect: “The EP illustrates the ties that bind us to our youth, balancing somber moments of longing and vibrant flashes of self-reflection.”

This song happens to embody the spirit of the album via the wistful half-time intro that bounces right into the ethereal Coldplay-esque guitar riff, which in and of itself is a flashbulb memory. It tells a story, reminding us that “even our best and worst memories are susceptible to distortion.”

Future Myth offers up the type of story we love to tell and be told, conceptually weaving musical and thematic ideas into one little gem of a song with a big voice.
