"Album review: Austin hip hop artist Pat G’s album Whatever It Takes deserves attention"

The Austin hip-hop scene is loaded with untapped talent. For some reason, the industry machine overlooks the many adept artists who need only to be heard. However, if Austin artist, Pat G’s new (dropped in April) sophomore album Whatever It Takes is an indicator of what’s to come for the Capitol City, the hip-hop world may soon take serious notice.

The Austin MC, originally from Temple, Texas has been rhyming as an enthusiastic hobby since 2010, and decided to pursue his dream in earnest in 2017. A recent graduate of Houston-Tillotson University (2018), Pat G aka Patrick Gamble now runs a small clothing operation to push his Be Relentless brand. You can find his clothing collection on Instagram.

From the opening track, “Real Rap,” Whatever It Takes sounds like an ode to 90’s hip-hop… from the 90’s. A funky bass line, witty wordplay and a sharp delivery are layered with record scratches and samples. There’s no Auto-Tune here, just pure, unadulterated hip-hop.

The EP continues with the piano-driven “Fight On,” a track about pushing through, “…they try to clip my wing, but I still soar,” the opening bars imprint the message from the start. The song features robust background vocals from Janice Nicole, whose presence adds an intriguing dimension to the tracks she participates in. We premiered the clip last year.

Chime bells ring in, introducing “Justice League,” a number utilizing clever puns and metaphors referring to various comic book characters. It’s a fun, invigorating cut that breaks the more serious tone of some songs early in the track-listing and offers relief from the social tensions conveyed on the record.

“It’s too late,” “Monique” and “Everyday” continue in solid form, the latter containing jazzy instrumentation reminiscent of the more light-hearted rap acts from the early-mid 90’s a la De La Soul and Digital Underground.

“Broken” may be the most emotionally substantial song on the album. Pat questions himself and at the same time, the song is about reassurance. “I had wits and grit/grab life by the horns, kept losing my grip…” It’s about not allowing yourself to be “broken” by any opposing force, external or internal. This theme of resilience appears throughout the record. Aside from the lyrical skill and exceptional production, Pat G’s message is an uplifting and inspiring one.

The final track, “Sometimes” serves as an appropriate finale to the EP, employing bits and pieces of what makes each song on the collection so effective. It is carried via piano and saxophone-laden, marimba-influenced instrumentation; it’s a nostalgic listen, as is the entire record.

Pat G’s decision to pursue a career rapping is panning out to have been a propitious one, given his obvious talent. “Whatever It Takes” is beyond solid; it’s highly-encouraging; a refreshing hip-hop record in a time when much of the mainstream rap world has become seemingly diluted. At this point, Pat G remains unsigned. With proper exposure, he could break through the local realm, and represent Texas on a grand scale. - The Cosmic Clash

"Skope Review: Pat G - 'The In Between'"

Pat G’s “The In Between EP” shows off a forceful flow and luxurious usage of stylish samples. Beats hit hard and the bass is downright perfect in its delivery. Lyrics are highly articulate in nature as they reveal a poetic sensibility. Grooves are infectious as Pat G reveals great taste and attention in how he carefully creates vast seas of sound. Layer upon layer of samples work wonderfully as they feel positively giddy in their playfulness.
“The In Between” starts things off wonderfully with a delightful flow of food-related phrasing as the song revels in child-like delight. Humorously delivered yet with a nostalgic ode the song is downright gorgeous. With “100” Pat G goes for a mellowed out vibe to take hold. Atmospheric in nature at first the nimble percussion comes in strong resulting in a powerful burst of energy. Over the course of the song Pat G proves his deft skill at creating a soulful, neon-hued arrangement one that at times recalls Flying Lotus’s clever arrangements. Easily the highlight of the collection is the hyperactivity of “Where Will I Go”. Many patterns interact creating an ornate arrangement. Delicately balanced its bass lines are absolutely outstanding, as the many samples weave their way in and out of the mix. Melodically rich the song reveals an almost origami-inspired sort of style. Closing the collection off on a high note is the introspective “Death And Change”.

On “The In Between EP” Pat G effortlessly blends elements of rap, hip hop, and electro into a satisfying whole. - Skope Mag

"JIMMY RAE SUITING UP FOR THE PAT G RELENTLESS TEAM"

Pat G is a talented, driven and faithful rapper not letting anything hold him back or get in his way. Pat is making Texas proud with his inspirational lyrics and work. Pat G stands true to the message of being relentless in this life as he looks to motivate and change lives for the better.

J Rae: I saw that you have a full plate as you’re a rapper, football coach and motivational speaker and so wondering if you could take us through a typical day for Pat G?

Pat G: (literally chuckling out loud) Ya know I often get asked this question and I’m not even sure how I do it. I usually wake up, go to my part time job, get off, go coach, workout and then work on writing. Sometimes those days are more hectic because I have more sessions or less, just depends.

J Rae: You started rapping back in 2010 and wonder what sparked that interest to pursue rap music in particular?

Pat G: Well, I’ve ALWAYS loved music. As far back as I can remember I’ve listened to or been around music. After a break up, I thought about what I wanted to do with my life. My cousin told me to do something that you could see yourself doing for the rest of your life, and rapping is something I thought about. I never rapped in high school and I wasn’t even sure how to get started and now I’m here.

J Rae: Who is your favorite rapper/hip-hop artist of all time and why? And how about your #1 music act of all time in any category or genre?

Pat G: I really can’t pick a number one but Nas and Lupe Fiasco are my two favorite rappers. Nas has just been that dude! He’s a legend and he’s the best in my eyes. He’s been in the game for 20 years plus and I hope my career can be at least half of that. Lupe Fiasco is lyrically the greatest of all time, in my opinion. There are lines and rhyme schemes that I’ve listened to, of his, that I still haven’t fully grasped the complete meaning. #1 music act for me has got to be John Mayer. I love lyrics. His songs and talents are nearly perfect!

J Rae: I noticed that you’re very much into your Christian faith which is wonderful and something on my mind in terms of this. In your honest opinion, do you feel if more people were heavily faith-based and true to it that there would be more love and peace and less problems and turmoil?

Pat G: Well of course! If more people had a heart for Jesus and obeyed God’s Word there wouldn’t be nearly as many problems in this world. Jesus is the only person who can change the hearts of man. So anytime I get the chance I want to just shine the light God gave me. I don’t expect people to always agree with me on certain things but I love God and I love people.

J Rae: Do you think that it’s humanly possible to achieve ultimate peace on earth and if so how and where do we start?

Pat G: I don’t believe that’ll ever happen, not because I’m a pessimist but because of The Bible and what it says. BUT…if that were to ever happen… it would start with people obeying the gospel of Jesus Christ. He can change the hearts of men!

J Rae: I wanted to say that I loved the video for “The In Between” because it was simple, down to earth and exhibited a nice touch of realness that was refreshing. Plus, the track itself contained super catchy hooks & beats that drew me in immediately! What inspired this song/music video and what are your final thoughts on “The In Between”? Are you 100% satisfied with how this project turned out? - SkopeMag
