Light Thieves play a cerebral, spacey brand of rock which can go from fast-paced and frenetic to calm and collected with the flip of a switch. Their rhythms are always heady, keeping you on your toes, but they don’t fall into the trap of getting so complex that you can’t follow them. The guitar are frequently coated in phasers, creating an evolving sound that’ll make your head spin. On top of all that, their live shows have an unmatched energy about them. "Light Thieves’ Spirit Homes is a pacing, cosmic colored pulse laced with ambient interludes and tempo changes not for the faint of heart. Fronted by Fierce Creatures Joel Melton and Mike Adame, this is the band’s first full length endeavor.
Joel’s distorted shoegaze pedal work meets Mike’s spacey synth at the crossroads of psychedelic and progressive. “Check Out, Switch On” and “Most Common Themes” are prime examples of the electric nature of their trading cascades of chords and wails.
At the core of its solid, driving tempo and intricate rhythms are Erica Najera (The Notones) on bass and Kaleb Saldate (Actress, Natural Thrills) on drums. Erica holds down fuzz fueled bass lines that grip tight to Kaleb’s beat, rooting songs like “Crystal Maps” to a heavy motive. Her lines are an omnipresent gravity, tethering songs like satellites with hooks and motives. Throughout the record, Kaleb’s phrasing is something like a secret ingredient- distinctly unique, multi-layered, and powerfully constant. Light Thieves is a four piece outfit from Fresno, California. Mike Adame and Joel Melton along with long time friends Kaleb Saldate and Erica Salazar began collaborating on a series of demos in the winter of 2011. Excited by the experimentation involved, the four continued to venture into musical territories that makes Light Thieves what it is today. Made up of synths, guitar, bass and drums, the outcome is something cosmic. Touching on many influences, the sounds made by Light Thieves range from progressive and groovy pop to psychedelic with an aggressive yet spacey twist.
With their most recent release, Spirit Homes, the group continues to tour and write music with the goal of reaching new audiences throughout the United States and creating new bonds with fellow musicians. Plans of a follow up 7" are currently in the works for early next year as well as a tour down through the Southwestern states and up to the Northwest.
