"Lord Badu - 22"

Brampton based Lord Badu drops the mixtape 22 after a two year hiatus from making music. This project gives listeners a glimpse of what he went through during that time and sheds light on the story of his life from birth until now.

Lord comes out the gate with the title track “22” that is an unashamed anthem of recognizing Christ as the reason why he made it to 22 (and now 23). Joined by Juliet Oh, Lord encourages us with the beginning journey of his testimony. This song encourages the listener to recognize that outside of Christ, we are destined for demise.
“The Encounter Interlude” gives us look into Lord’s mind with his prayer at the beginning to “Encounter the Lord in a fresh and new way.” As the bars begin to flow, we notice a change in the speech pattern and realize that it’s Christ speaking to Lord as he has a fresh “Encounter.” Speaking of His sacrifice on the cross and how that brings us forgiveness. The piano backdrop on this track adds to the smooth vibe.

“Brickyard Way” and “Like Me (Confidence)” pair up next to bring some dope encouragement to those who are might be going through some difficulties. “Brickyard Way” comes with a sober “lift up your head” tip that reminds us to walk in community because we need each other. “Like Me” can come off cocky, but it’s hype track to focus on who you are in Christ! The production on this one will have it on the party playlist this weekend for sure.

“Africana Woman”, “Love Love pt 2 (feat. Kayla Starks)” and “Pepper” all deal with love and relationships. We hear Lord go from looking for the “Africana Woman” that he’s been searching for to following Christ to remain pure in “Love Love pt. 2” to how hearing how his lady can make “him better.” This can be an example for us all that if we walk with Christ in a pure way that for those who may be searching can find a “Good Thing.” Jumping down to “Rejection” deals with the heartache that comes with heartbreak, and the healing that God brings after.

As we continue to walk with Lord on this journey to 22, we get to see many of the questions, doubts, tribulations and revelations that he experienced with “Pryde Freestyle”, “Real Prophetz (feat. Mouthpi3ce & Alex Pigani), “Visions (feat. S.O.)”, “Losing My Religion” and “Sola Gratia pt. 2”. Self-realization, exposing greed and manipulation in the church, and more are among the subject matter covered.

As we come to the end of this journey, we find ourselves passing by “23rd Avenue” Lord soberly reflects on where he has come from and points us to trust in the promise that “we will make it through.”

22 is an encouraging encounter with the life of Lord! I have no doubt that as he continues to pursue the Lord and make music that he will no doubt impact many for the Kingdom. I look forward to what God will do with him and his music.

"Lord Badu – Like Me (Confidence) | @LordBadu"

Lord Badu is a Canadian born, Ghanaian raised Emcee who grew up in the church but did not completely understand the significance of the cross till he was 16. He entered the hip hop culture in the 8th grade and realized he really had a strong interest in it. He was influenced by artists such as Tupac, Fugees, Nas and Bob Marley. While living with his older cousins, they would always be listening to either the latest Tupac or Bob Marley album. Because of this, their content had a serious influence on him. Badu loved hearing and making up stories because of Tupac and he loved discussing religion, peace and other various topics because of Bob Marley. He had always considered his music conscious but he realized that being conscious or sounding wise won’t change or affect people’s lives. However, as he grew older, he understood that only the message of God sending his son Christ could change a heart of stone to a heart of flesh. Badu started to take his craft very serious and made a mission for himself, and that is to use the beauty of art to spread a beautiful message to an ugly world. He has been recognized for his charismatic character, creative lyricism, and outstanding and distinct flow.

Badu’s musical genres are Contemporary Christian, Hip Hop, Alternative hip hop, Jazz & Neo Soul.

"Christian rapper from Brampton brings songs of hope and faith in new album"

Inspiration, rather than angst, remains the heart of Brampton-based Christian rapper Lord Badu’s newly dropped mixtape, 22.

The album, which emerged out of a two-year musical hiatus, makes several statements, primarily the result of the artist’s deep soul-searching.

During the two-year break, Lord Badu, 22, admits have found his groove as a musician and as well as an individual.

“As an artist, it's my hope to be able to relate real life, good music, and faith all together,” he explained. “I make music about ‘good news’, and that's what I want to spread first and foremost without sounding too religious or preachy.”

Even though 22 is his personal story, the Brampton rapper is confident the songs will resonate with his fans who will make the content theirs.

The mixtape has nine songs and chronicles the life of the rapper, poet and nonprofit president’s life from birth to now.

Lord Badu spend his early years at McHardy Court in Brampton, and eight years ago, he moved to Brickyard Way — a subdivision near Bovaird Drive and Hurontario Street. So special is this street that the album’s second single Brickyard Way pays homage to it. The newly released video, shot in and around his home, also introduces the viewers to his faith and friends.

The album is a mix of contemporary hip hop, R&B, and Afro-beats.

For instance, the mixtape’s first release, Like Me, features a heavy funk-inspired beat that would make Bruno Mars proud, the Bramptonian admits.

“I wanted this album to represent every side of me,” he said. “I wanted my fans to understand how I’ve lived to get to this point; to open up and really let the listeners see what makes me, me.”

As a Christian rapper, Lord Badu’s songs are peppered with references to scriptures and God.

“People fail to realize that the Bible discusses anything that you have a question for, you just have to find it,” he said, adding his musical idols were Bob Marley and Tupac, and their stories captivated him. “I was raised in church my whole life and never fully deviated from that path.”

The full mixtape will be released June 22 and will be available for free on Spotify, Bandcamp and SoundCloud. For more information, visit www.lordbadu.com. - The Brampton Gaurdian

The mixtape will feature 15 songs and take listeners on a journey through Lord’s life from birth to now, the age of 22. The mixtape features an eclectic mashup of contemporary hip-hop, R&B, and afrobeats. All music will be available for free on Spotify, Bandcamp, and SoundCloud.

“I wanted this album to represent every side of me,” says Lord Badu, artist. “I wanted my fans to understand how I’ve lived to get to this point; to open up and really let the listeners see what makes me me.”

The mixtape’s first single, released on April 12, is called “Like Me (Confident)” and features a heavy funk-inspired beat that would make Bruno Mars proud. Its high energy and fun lyrics play heavily on Lord Badu’s mainstream appeal. “It’s a really personal album for Lord,” says Shade Waheed, artist manager, Fifth Mode Management. “I’m very pleased with the output. His goal was to bring his fans into his world and let them see a bit more of his process, and that’s exactly what he did.”

"HIP HOP PICK: LORD BADU - IN-TELL-LECT"

Smooth, slick and all about intellect. "In-tell-lect" is new track by Canadian hip hop artist Lord Badu. Lord Badu hails from Brampton, Ontario and brings forth his latest effort. This right here is a beautiful track with a smooth jazzy beat, that harkens back to the good ol'days of concious/old school hiphop of the late 90's and early 2000's.

The percussion on this beat impressively mixes bongos drums and xylophones, that absolutely sounds gorgeous. The track opens up with a excerpt about intelligence, which preps the listener for what is to come.

This song promotes quality and substance and embraces the movement of more intelligence in the hip hop culture. Nothing about this song is superficial.

Although the lyrics can be a bit tighter, Lord Badu comes into this track with a lot of heart and soul, which is especially cool to see in this day and age where everything "has" to be about punchlines about either violence or financial pursuits.

This is definitely worth even though it may be a bit of a chore for those who do not like being preached to, but there are still plenty of good elements to like about this song. - Zambah
