"New York rapper is out to prove there's more to Maxxx then just Flair"

Flair is an ability to do something well. It can relate to stylishness and originality. None displays this better than New York's Maxxx Flair.

The Harlem born and Queen raised, Maxxx, intends to show the world his unique qualities on the m.i.c. on his latest project "S.E.I.S. Chapter 2." The project has 11-tracks where Maxxx's idiosycratic flow glides across tracks produced by Roya Marsh, Tru Dat from Philadelphia, MrConnection from Philadelphia, 52Kings from Seattle, Flamingosis from New Jersey and more.

Maxxx sits down for some Q&A with Rani of AGirlandHerHipHop.com where the rapper revealed what he like in a girl crush.

AGHH: NY is a hard city to be a rapper in, so what's the one word that describes your flow and helps you stand out from the us?

Maxxx Flair: Idiosyncratic. I think what happens a lot of the time is people try so hard to find a reason why they're different, to convince listeners that they stand out from everyone else. I think just being myself is what makes me different; we're all unique and have had different experiences, no one person's story is the same. My ability to be myself and paint pictures that speak to a larger audience in a raw and uncut cadence is what makes me special.

AGHH: When did you know that you wanted to become a rapper?

Maxxx Flair: I knew that I liked writing lyrics in the 5th grade, so that's when I began to dabble with taking ideas from my brain and putting them onto paper in a cohesive form. Throughout middle school I furthered my craft, recording and writing, I was even in a group in 7th and 8th grade haha! Still, It wasn't until 9th grade when I attended a boarding school in Pennsylvania where I met fellow New York Artist, Accent, and he taught me song
format, and the technical components to being a rapper; that's when I knew it was something that I wanted to do professionally.

AGHH: Where do you see yourself in the rap industry in the next five years?

Maxxx Flair: Established. I can't say to what degree, however, I do know that within the next five years I will be very well established as a Recording Artist and Live Performer. I've never wanted to "just be a rapper," and limit myself to that stigma, so whatever I'm doing in five years within the industry, will definitely be more evolved than just releasing records.

AGHH: What do you want listeners to get from listening to your music?

Maxxx Flair: I want my listeners to feel something. My content is very diverse, some songs are narratives, some songs are turn up; regardless I want my listeners to be moved toward some form of progression. My entire brand is about motivating individuals to be inspired to search; to step out from their comfort zones, and shake off the weight of complacency until they find their confidence, and their unique voice.

AGHH: What do you use for inspiration for your music?

Maxxx Flair: In the grand scheme of things, Women. Definitely, relationships. My experiences, and the experiences of those close around me... But on an every day scale, I can get inspired by anything; a meme I see on social media, a commercial on television, an Ad on a passing bus, a conversation I over heard in a pizza shop, I'm constantly gathering data I might be able to use and turn into a record concept. I definitely ear hustle, no shame! Haha

AGHH: Who are some of the producers you worked with on your new project "S.E.I.S Chapter 2?"

Maxxx Flair: I worked with poet, Roya Marsh, Tru Dat from Philadelphia, Mr.Connection from Philadelphia, 52Kings from Seattle, Flamingosis from New Jersey, to name a few. The bulk of the production though, was done by my guy Tru Dat.

AGHH: Me and Tracee Ellis Ross are born on the same day, which has absolutely nothing to do with your track bearing her name, but what do you look for in a girl crush?

Maxxx Flair: Haha well happy early birthday! Hmmm, I wont bore you by giving you a run on list haha, I'm a simple guy. I love confidence, intelligence and wit. I'm a sucker for a pretty face, and physical assets are by no means a deal breaker, even if I am praising a booty like Tracee Ellis Ross' on the record lol Actually if you listen to the record real close it's much deeper than an initial attraction to aesthetics; I even start that record talking about this female I'm dealing with by saying, "Aside from her body she majors in psychology, which is probably one of the main reasons, I got the hots for she." So intelligence will definitely get you some points in my girl crush escapades, Haha.

AGHH: Any other ventures outside of music?

Maxxx Flair: Definitely 100% I'm working on some very exciting and amazing things outside of music, that I'll make common public knowledge in due time. But 100% I love music as a craft, and I love what it means to be a creative, but by no means do I plan on "just being a rapper", I'm an entrepreneur who raps.

AGHH: Any shows planned for?

Maxxx Flair: You can find shows updated on my website Maxxxflair.com. I have a few things in the works, but the biggest things haven't been finalized yet. I'm hoping to tour the east coast in the Fall and will be doing somethings up in Canada as well. As soon as it can be made public I will definitely let you guys know.

AGHH: Anything you want to add?

Listen to Maxxx's latest release ft Sunny Jones "Break You Off 2014." - A Girl and Her Hip Hop

"POP Montréal"

Formerly a trumpet player, Maxxx Flair’s interest in hip hop pushed him to begin writing his own songs at the age of 12. Flair’s name is a playful artist’s boast of merit that dares your ears not to enjoy his R&B and hip hop sensibilities, or challenges you to best his rhythms.

Being born in Harlem, raised in Queens, moving to Yonkers and attending Boarding School and College in Pennsylvania has allowed Maxxx’s music to embody a true definition of diversity. Focusing on material aimed at a broad demographic has transcended his music onto a higher level, separating him from the general population of Artists who simply label themselves as different. Flair’s lyrical content and delivery provide a sound that is unique and immediately demands the attention of listeners. As a hard worker who is dedicated to progression, he’s never satisfied and will continue to grow as an artist with every bar.

Although he was already an instrumental musician, having played the trumpet in an orchestra at Carnegie Hall, Maxxx transferred his energy onto his love for hip-hop at the age of 12, when he began writing his own music. At 14, he recorded for the first time in a professional studio, laying a verse over Nas’s, “You Can Hate Me Now.” In 2009, Maxxx met drummer and friend, Darrius Moore at Franklin & Marshall College, as they were both members of campus organization, I.M.P.A.C.T (Intelligent Men Purposefully Accomplishing College Together). After opening for, Lupe Fiasco in 2012, Darrius introduced Maxxx to Sunny Jones, and soon after, they formed Game Six Global.

Poised to establish a high reputation as a recording artist and entrepreneur, Maxxx will continue to leave his footprint on the entertainment world and, in 2014, intends to show that he is indeed, “Here To Stay”. - POP Montréal

"S.E.I.S Chapter 1"

I’m all for self-expression, but the extent to which under-and-post-grads have begun chasing down full-time careers in hip-hop is concerning. It seems to signify the misconception that attaining a lucrative presence in the genre comes with ease; you don’t need to know music theory, don’t need to be able to play an instrument, and don’t really even need a good singing voice, though it certainly helps your versatility and is more appealing in this post-So Far Gone era of hip-hop. Thus, for those who like to write and like the idea of stardom and like the idea of feeding their egos, hip-hop seems like a relatively simple and satisfying career aspiration. It helps, too, that this is 2014 and gangsta rap is no longer the forefront of the genre. We’ve reached a time when there is no defined rapper aesthetic, when Sammy Adams is as equally recognizable as an emcee as Bun B. This is all to say that every day bloggers around the country have their inboxes stocked with thoroughly uninspired rap. Rap that at least attempts to replicate the sounds and flows of what already exists on the radio, as if recycling Big Sean’s flow from “All Me” guarantees radio placement.

This is why it’s so exciting to receive a record like S.E.I.S. It’s surprisingly easy when you listen to an album to tell if the artist enjoyed making it, and whether its sound is genuine and authentic. When that is the case, it’s that much more fun to digest, and it doesn’t make you question the artist’s goals. If the passion is there, they’re not only more likely to do the work necessary to become a success to the extent of a Macklemore or Logic or Hoodie Allen — which is really hard — but also that probably doesn’t even matter to them. It’s art, it’s their passion, and the unlikelihood of acceptance shouldn’t hold them back — the same way that the low acceptance rate at top law schools doesn’t keep hopefuls from applying in bulk. Maxxx Flair, an NYC native, was first featured on FNT in 2012 with “Forever Dope”, and while he was already a budding emcee at the time, his progression as a lyricist and technical rapper is immediately made clear from the first few bars of the intro. Fueled by a solid selection of lively, hard-hitting beats, Maxxx shines over this set of seven tracks, showcasing his finesse with cadence, wide range of flows, and strong attention-to-detail as a writer. Accompanying the mixtape is the video for the first single, “F@#K !t”, produced by 52 Kings, which you can find below. "Introducing Maxxx Flair"

We all have a story to tell, but each person chooses to tell his story in a distinguished way. My good friend, Josh Harris, has been exercising his artistic expression through his passion in hip-hop music, undergoing his solo project, Maxxx Flair. As a New Yorker, Josh has established his unique rhythmical and lyrical swag, deriving inspiration from some of the greats including Mathod Man, Mase, Nas, Jay-Z, Black Thought, Peedi Crakk, Outkast, Biggie, Big L, Big Pun, just to name a few.

Hip-hop has developed a unique role in modern society, particularly among the youth, with lyrical content that can provide profound guidance or superficial indulgences. As stated by Josh, “music overall, has the power to influence one’s emotions, and that’s what makes it so prevalent globally.” The trend remains the same in pop-culture, yet Josh is truly unique in his sincere interest in exploring other music genres to further expand his auditory knowledge.

The name “Maxxx Flair” stands for the survival of individualism, and the ability to maintain a consistent style across all genres of music. In other words, it represents the power to stand out, especially during times when it can be all too alluring to simply give in. “I do everything with Max effort and my approach is raw and uncut, I don’t like being pigeon holed or forced into labels.” This is the organic attitude that drives Maxxx Flair to confidently trust his gut instincts and stand behind what he believes in.

Earlier this year, Maxxx Flair opened for the Lupe Fiasco concert at Franklin and Marshall College. His music video “Show Me” features footage from the concert, which was one hell of a night. Check it out for yourselves below!

It’s great watching this upcoming artist’s growth as he continues to astonish the crowds with his catchy beats and poetic cleverness, which smoothly plays out to a particular rhythm reminiscent of the wild nights we all remember with a grin.

Stay tuned for the release of Maxxx Flair’s first LP, The Vault! - The New Philadelhpia
